Keke POV
I woke up to a silent house, as always. I usually wake up earlier than everyone else because I find it easier and less of a distraction when getting dressed and taking a shower. I decided to check on Khalil's brother and sister since they were staying in the guest room next to mine.
I was anxious to know what happened to Khalil that made him so uncomfortable with the topic last night. He looked so angry and I could tell he was, but he wouldn't let it show in front of his siblings. I would've spoken to him in private, but he looked like at any second, he was going to explode.
I got shower and washed my hair before finding an outfit to wear to school and putting it in a messy bun, not really wanting to fix it at the moment. My outfit consisted of a comic book styled sweatshirt with rips here and there going throughout the article along with a pair of dark faded skinny jeans and converse sneakers and a gray beanie.
Kyle said Khalil and his brother and sister weren't there anymore, which I respond with a simple shrug knowing that Khalil wouldn't let them go far from his vision and would do everything in his power to protect them. He was always going out of his way to make them happy. I knew this because his younger sister was telling me and Aunt Gina about how he was always fighting for her when someone touched her. I had no idea what she meant by that but at the moment, I doubt I want to find out what it really meant.
"Bye, I'm going!" I shouted out as I grabbed an apple and a banana.
Aunt Gina shouted "Bye" as I opened the door and began my journey to school.
--
"Hey," Sanchez shouted out as I walked down the halls towards my locker.
"Hi, Sanchez!" I greeted with a kiss on the cheek.
"¿Cómo estás?" he said as I put the combo in my lock.
"Bien, y tú?" I said.
He chuckled and shrugged. "Waiting for a beautiful girl to come and talk to me like she promised, ¿Sabe? "
I smiled and faintly blushed, although I'm completely oblivious to who he's referring to.
"Who's the lucky girl?" I asked.
He shrugged. "I dunno. Whoever you want it to be I guess." he said, biting his lip.
I blushed again and looked down to save the embarrassment of him noticing my cheeks as read as the red circle on the Japanese flag.
I gasped and looked back to see a random girl walking down the halls with a guy.
"Hey, girl with the shirt!" I yelled, "Sanchez says he's waiting for you to come and talk to him! He wants the fresh, warm pu--
He covered my mouth before I could finish the sentence. He nervously chuckled and covered up by saying that I had too much coffee this morning.
"You're not as nice and quiet as you were yesterday," Sanchez pouted.
I giggled and kissed his cheek. "Sorry buddy. I'll go mute just for you, okay?"
He laughed and shook his head. "No thank you, Keke. I like em loud and reckless."
I laughed at his ... unique choice of words and begin the short journey to English, the class where I can finally get answers from Khalil about yesterday.
--
Time goes by so slow when you're eager for answers. After 45 long, gruesome minutes, the bell finally rings. I gracefully pack my books and turn to talk to Khalil. He, however, is not present and is halfway out the door already.
"Khalil," I called out. He didn't turn around, instead he picked up his pace and went faster out the door than necessary.
I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. Avery chuckled and approached me casually.
"You look pretty today." he said, trying to break the ice.
"Thanks. Can I ask you something?"
He shrugged and said, "Go ahead."
I sighed and walked side by side with him out the door. Sanchez was already out the door and talking to Julia and Terrence. They acknowledged me and eyed Avery up and down. Julia mouthed "Are you two going out?" I contained my laughter and shook my head ferociously. "Never in a million years." I mouthed back.
"What was it you wanted to ask me?" Avery said upon noticing the looks he was receiving from Julia, Terrence, and Sanchez.
"Um," I turned my attention back to him, "What's his story?"
"Who? Lil? Aw man, I dunno." he said, , rubbing his facial hair.
"But I thought--"
"Just because we chill and all don't mean I know everything about him. He never opens up to me. He's sketchy sometimes. It's scary to think of it so I try not to." Avery sighed and stopped. "Look, try to find out about him if you want to, but I don't want to hear about it if it's bad." He looked away, "Man, I feel bad for him."
I scrunched my eyebrows and looked at him with confusion.
"His dad died a while ago. He basically raises his brother and sister by himself. His mom works two jobs during the week and another on the weekends to make ends meet. She only has Sunday off to praise the Lord, Hallelujah." he sighed, "But sometimes he comes through all busted up and I have no clue why. He doesn't fight, except that one time he fought Issa, but even then he was pretty good afterwards." He bit his lip and shook his head. "He says his uncle ain't shit. I think his uncle's a drunk. I go to his house and he's always on the couch with a shot of booze in his hand. But he looks at Gina and Gavin with disgust and I think sometimes lust..." Avery's eyes looked glossy and he sniffled. "I can't talk about this anymore. I gotta get to class. Bye." he said, quickly walking away.
I sighed and rolled my back down the lockers with my eyes squinted closed.
I only knew this much about Khalil and it's not even from him like I intended it to be. All I know is that something bad is happening in Khalil's life and I plan on being there for him when it all comes into play.
I might have been over-thinking this, but I had a bad habit of getting involved in things that have nothing to do with me. You know how they say "Curiosity killed the cat"? Yeah, well that'll eventually happen to me but I wouldn't bet on it.
Anyways, I thought I needed to do a little ... investigating on the life of Khalil Underwood.
I just needed a Scooby-Doo Investigation team so I don't look like the only one who is crazy...
