“Miss Cordilia Mackel, I don’t mean to interrupt you from your day dream, but I believe you can get a lot more information out of me than the window.” The class giggled when the teacher, Ms. Bitch-face, well, Ms. Joel, said my full name. No one called me that, but my parents and apparently Ms. Joel when she had her head up her ass, which is all the time by the way. I sighed and looked to her not making eye contact, but simply looking at her feet,
“The universe, the world, everything is outside that window, Ms. Joel. There are much more things to learn outside that window than I ever will in this classroom.” Ms. Joel gasped at my strong voice, I barely ever spoke, in class or anywhere besides when I was with my friends.
“Miss Cordilia Mackel, I believe you just earned yourself an after school detention for talking back and disrespecting the teacher tomorrow morning, you know if you would have just said sorry I wouldn’t have had to do that.” She said and instantly grabbed the detention slip and slapped it hard on my desk. Then she slapped her heels against the floor and went back to the lesson. I looked down at the slip and I had to admit I smirked. Welp, hello there friend, I thought to slip as if it could hear and respond. I rolled my neck letting it crack and then picked up my pencil and started doodling in the corner of my desk.
“Cory, you better pay attention…” Lenny said leaning over his desk behind me. I looked over my shoulder about to tell him to suck it and then I saw him holding my pencil. I looked down at my hand and sure enough it wasn’t there. I grabbed it from his hand and turned back around, Lenny was always pulling jokes no one understood. I mean I literally had my pencil two seconds ago. Lenny was a sophomore that wore black jeans and a studded belt with vans and a black sweatshirt that always had a pack of cigarettes in his left pocket. Lenny had the most black straight hair that he flipped every two seconds to get out of his even darker eyes. This Indian boy next to me leaned over and whispered,
“Gosh, Cory, your so smart and brave. You actually stood up to a teacher and got her to shut up. Too bad you got detention.” Now usually you would think the kid was being sarcastic, but he wasn’t. He was being serious and so I cut him a little slack and looked the other way ignoring him instead of shooting him a smart ass response. Lenny tilted his head up snorting at the poor Indian attempting to flirt with me. I sat slouched in my seat and intensely stared at the teacher the rest of the class making her know the last thing she wants looking at her is me. I sighed and kept staring, at last the bell rang and I instantly stood and rushed towards the door. Right as I was making the escape, something grabbed my wrist and I turned, Ms. Joel.
“How’s the move with your Uncle going?” She asked. I instantly readjusted the strap of my backpack and looked to all the free teenagers fleeing the classroom. Lucky bastards.
“It’s good.” I answered turning to sprint away.
“The teachers are worried about you, Cordillia. You can’t seem to pay attention in class.” Joel said, and I tried my best to not roll my eyes.
“I am getting A’s in all of my classes, Ms. Joel.” I said still turning away from her.
“Just because you are getting A’s doesn’t mean you don’t need help. Maybe you should see someone to talk about your parents with.” I took a deep breath.
“Ms. Joel, you don’t have to act like you actually care, so please, I would appreciate it if you just told all the teachers I am fine. Just because my parents moved on doesn’t mean that I am not…” okay. I couldn’t finish. “Thank you for this chat, really, but I am fine.” I said and sprinted out of the room before she could stop me. I slowed down to a walk and went straight out the front door of the school and sat where my friends met me for lunch. Bebe was the first one there with a distant smile hanging off his lips as he took a mammoth size bite of tuna fish sandwich. I sat across from him on the picnic table and he instantly looked to me.
