Innocent Death.

Chapter 5:The Run

Nonstop walking. Fatigue. The group walked forever.Alec ended up throwing Abbey onto his back,carrying her.Nightfall came long ago. the forest seemed endless.

"Zoe,you need to rest.We all do.",Max said,reaching out to Zoe. She was staggering.Her eyes could barely be held open.She had led the group most of the way. She spoke back to him,her voice stuttering as if she was drunk.

"We can't...we can't sleep here.Its not safe.We'll find..a town..a town soon."

Max sighed,as they pushed on.

"Can we rest here?My back hurts like hell.We've been walking for hours.",Alec said,struggling to keep Abby on his back.

Sierra responded,"What if zombies are out here?They'll kill us.Lets just take a break. Hang out here for a bit."

The group nodded.Alec set Abbey down,as she yawned,landing onto the ground. Alec rushed to Sierra's side,Sierra shooing him away like a fly. Max aided Zoe,helping her stand long enough to find a good spot to sit. He helped her gently sit down,as he then sat beside her. Abbey layed down on the forest floor,falling back asleep.

Alec and Sierra sat slightly further away from the group.They whispered,trying not to wake Abbey.

"How come you push away everyone that comes to you?" Alec asked.

Sierra replied, "I felt that if you're alone,you are never disappointed by those who left,because there was nobody."

"Isn't that lonely?"

"Yes.But nobody can disappoint me but me."

"I like you."

"We're in a zombie apocalypse.I don't think I have time for a relationship right now."

Alec chuckled under his breath.

Meanwhile,Max and Zoe whispered to each other as well.

"Why did you even save us?" Zoe said.

Max thought for a moment,then spoke,"Damsels in distress woke us."

Zoe smiled."We aren't damsels.More like the damned."

"The damned have never looked so beautiful."

"This isn't the time to be in love,Max."

"Who's going to stop me?"

"The walkers."

"They can't kill you."

"They can kill you."

Max stared at Zoe,in shock for a moment.He then smiled,finding slight care in her tone.She smirked back at him,then layed down.Her head fell onto his lap.He gently rest his hand onto her shoulder.He slouched,not wanting to make her uncomfortable.

Sierra and Alec looked towards Zoe and Max. Alec looked to Sierra,smirking. He then slouched,imitating Max.Sierra caught on to what Alec thought.

"This isn't the time for love,Alec.Or for sleeping on you.At least the ground won't flirt with me." Sierra said,smirking as she lays on the ground. Alec chuckles,rubbing his eyes and falling asleep.

Morning rose.Groans and moans rumbled in the distance.The noises woke Max,gently but rapidly shaking Zoe to wake.She sat up,listening to the noises. She whispered the others,as they slowly rose. They fell silent,listening as the sound got slightly louder.

"What do we do?",Abbey whispered,"We can't move.We don't know where the noise is coming from.We could run straight to them.And if we keep running,we need to find another location. We can't just keep running this endless forest."

Zoe stood up,grabbing her shotgun. She then spoke to the group."Let's just listen,then run until the sound gets quieter," she said,"then we'll know we're in the clear when we can't hear them anymore.Maybe then we can find another village."

The group made it to their feet,as they slowly formed a jog.The sound got louder. The group turned and ran the opposite way.The sound got quieter.They sprinted, as the sound slowly started dimming,fading.

After quite a while of sprinting,the group wound up into what appeared to be another village.The forest bushes hid them from it,but they could see it.

"I'll go check it out.Make sure there's no walkers.", Zoe said.

Max grabbed her shoulder,and interrupted her on her start to enter the village,"No! You don't know how safe it is."

"You don't know how safe I am." Zoe smirked,beginning to walk out but yet again interrupted.

"Wait," Sierra said,taking off her quiver of arrows and handing it to Zoe,along with her bow,"Give me your gun. If you shoot it when we have walkers,even from miles away,gunfire attracts them."

Zoe grabbed the materials,swinging the quiver over her back but having one arrow taken out before she did this. She loaded the arrow and nodded. Zoe walked out of the forest brush and went to scan the village. The group watched,Max almost revealing himself.He was ready to run.
