"Stephen?" the woman in the bed said to the man standing beside me. Her brown hair was spread across the pillows like leaves on a forest floor and I wanted nothing more than to rake a comb through it.
"Yes, my darling?" he answered her, towing me along closer to the hospital bed she was lying on.
"Can I hold her? One more time..." Her voice trails off and comes off as a hoarse whisper.
"Of course." He says forlorn and looks down at me.
My small body was suddenly lifted up on the bed and the woman's weak hands slowly pulled me toward her frail body.
"Oh, my dearest Anna. Don't let anyone ever get you down." She says and pats my blonde hair that's always sticking out everywhere. "You have the potential to be so much. Don't let anyone ever take that away from you."
"Mommy?" My small, confused voice comes out. "Mommy when are you coming home?"
Looking at me, her bottom lip slowly began quivering. Tears filled her eyes and for a moment I was confused again.
Why was she crying?
"Soon baby." She says and kissed my head. "I love you Anna. I love you so much. Always remember that."
She hugs me to her one more time and hands me to the man.
"Take care of her Stephen. Were all she has left." She says and another tear slips from her eyes.
"I will." He says, his voice cracking at the last word.
When the woman's eyes flutter shut suddenly and the machine by her bed blares a sound that sounds like something final.
Suddenly, the man cries out and before I know what's happening he's slumped over on the floor crying.
