The group reached an abandoned cottage. The door hinges were almost coming off,as the door creaked beneath the low, foggy wind. They walked in,seeing no walkers. Then, they all say down on the floor.
"I don't know if we can leave this one," Sierra said,"This is the second village we found. Its actually not totally dead.Yet.It was a miracle we found this place,I don't know if we can leave this one too."
Max said,"I think we might have to.What can we do?Fight them until we can't fight anymore and die?"
"Yes," Zoe spoke up,"Would you rather go in the infested forest again?Even better chance of death then this place."
Max fell silent. He knew that Zoe was right.
"I just want to go home!!",Abbey screamed, holding her head in frustration.
Alec calmly walked over to her,and say beside her.He rubbed her back gently, and whispered to her.
"I want to go home too," he whispered,"but now, this is home. We'll help you,Abbey. It's ok.I promise."
Abbey released the grip of her head and looked to Alec, with tears in her eyes.Alec patted her shoulder, and looked into her eyes, giving her an assuring look. She smiled.
"Thank you," Abbey said,"I needed that. You're a good friend.I don't wanna lose you."
"Then don't.",Alec said, smiling. He then patted her on the back, and walked over to Sierra.Sierra rolled her eyes, then began to smile.Alec wrapped his arm around her.She was tense, and Alec could feel it.But she allowed him to hold her.
"Poor Haymus," Zoe mumbled,"He didn't deserve to die."
"And you did?", Max said,"Yes,it was awful, his death. But we got out safely. He was old, anyway. It was better to be killed by his wife-"
"He saw his wife as one of the dead! He was ripped apart and killed by his own love!I should've ran up there and helped him.We all heard his screaming.I should've gone up there and-"
"Died?No.I couldn't-I mean,we couldn't bear that.We got out. We can't save everybody."
Zoe's eyes turned glassy, she tipped her head down, not wanting Max to see her cry.He tipped her head up, and wrapped his arms around her.She pulled out of his reach, and walked over to Sierra and Alec, wiping her eyes.
"Can I join you guys?", Zoe said, smirking as Alec and Sierra nodded, chuckling.Zoe sat beside the two.
"You've stayed with us for a while. You're not sick of us yet?",Alec said.
Zoe chuckled."No," she said,"You saved our asses,I can't be sick of somebody who saved me and my friends."
"You saved us,Zo."
"No."
"No?"
"It would be we saved you,not just me.I'm not a leader.Sierra is.I just happened to do small things to help, just like Abbey."
"Oh?"
Zoe looked down to the floor.
"How long have you three been with each other?" Alec said, almost hesitating.
Zoe swallowed her emotions."I've left everyone for Sierra," she said,"my family,my love.Abbey, well,Sierra and I met her when we met you."
Alec's eyes were wide and intense. He was listening intensely to her story.
Sierra, tearing up and smiling, spoke to Zoe,sitting up straighter as Alec released his grip on her.
"I love you like a sister, man.",Sierra said,"I'll fight with and for you until the end."
Zoe nodded,as Sierra wrapped her arms around her, hugging.
Abbey stood up,looking out the window of the cottage.
Silence.Fog.
If you looked close enough, you could see the villagers moving about quickly in their poorly protected houses.Lights and candles were lighting the houses from the darkness of the night.
The rest of the group fell asleep.Abbey sighed at the dead village, and turned around. She sank down below the window and fell asleep.
. . .
Max woke up first,to silence. He jumped to his feet.He was so used to rude awakenings,it was almost automatic. He scanned the cottage.
Nothing.
He scratched his head and fingered through his hair, confused. Why the sudden peace? The walkers aren't all dead.Max walked over to Alec, cuddled up against Sierra's back.He kicked Alec's back, causing Alec to spring up.
"How many we got now?!" Alec screamed.
"Shut up!",Max harshly whispered,"You'll wake the girls. Its weird,man.Silence.Peace.Nothing is here."
Alec gave Max a suspicious look.He then walked over to the window.
Outside, the fog decreased. There were strange things on the ground that Alec could not make out.He turned, seeing the girls standing up.
"What's got your eyes?",Sierra asked.
"Strange things," Alec said,"strange things outside.Lets check it out."
Zoe walked out of the cottage first.Alec followed, and Sierra walked with Abbey.Max went last. They stopped.Along with their hearts.
Humans.Dead humans.
Bodies.
They layed next to each other, packaged like sardines.Lifeless, but the scene was so alive.
Abbey screamed at the scene, but Sierra covered her mouth to stop it all from coming out.Zoe stood before the bodies, her eyes glassy and filling with tears.Max and Alec had their heads lowered, in sorrow.
A silent massacre.
Without speaking, the group slowly walked forward, leaving the scene in sorrow.
The whole group was silent. All they did was walk.
"God bless them." Alec said.
Ahead, something was in the distance. The figures were too human like to call zombies, yet they were limping, moaning, groaning. The crew stopped and stared.
