Black. White. All we were ever able to see was a mere kaleidoscope of every possible shade of gray. We were monochrome people in a monochrome world. Only those who had been touched could experience this mysterious thing called "color" that we'd all read about in books. The ones who were lucky enough to encounter it would say it was indescribable, something that a person would never be able to imagine. They were laughed at and deemed insane. Meeting their soulmate would finally allow someone to see it. Many were devastated when they found the one they believed to be their soulmate, committed the crime of touching them, but never saw it. The government told us that it was all a myth. We were forbidden to make physical contact with anyone other than kin and our assignment. We were wedded to our assignments when we reached our twenty second year. No one questioned anything.
