Sweeping Up the Mess

Kiren breathed through clenched teeth as Alexia's carriage pulled away. He slipped from behind a pillar and turned his focus to his companion. It was time to finish cleaning up this mess.

Edward stood in the doorway, a perfect gentleman except for the secret he harbored. They had almost caught all the gentry last night, but the Vanwick family had escaped. Until now.

Edward took Sir Vanwick's hand in a parting farewell, and looked right into the nobleman's eyes.

Sweat beaded Sir Vanwick's forehead. His arm trembled. He gasped and fell back, pulling free of Edward's touch. Blinking twice, Sir Vanwick opened his mouth. "What was I saying? Oh yes, I do hope Baron Galedrew enjoys his holiday in London, though his departure was ill timed."

"An unfortunate circumstance of business," Edward replied. "And why do you suppose Baron Dumont has been hiding his lovely daughter all this time?"

The nobleman inclined his head. "Why, she should have been snatched up by royalty if he had been less cautious. Charles Dumont is a wise chap."

Edward waved toward the rest of the family. "Surely you will introduce me to your beautiful wife and children?"

Kiren gritted his teeth and turned away, watching the dust cloud of Alexia's departure. Only one witness remained.
