The darkness of the night seemed to swallow any bit of bravery that had kept me going. I stood motionless, frozen with fear, my hair whipping around my face. I hugged Jeffrey closer, stroking his soft feathers. I looked down at him, and in the dark I could see his adorable bulging eyes staring up at me.
I could see the silhouettes of zombies trudging closer by the second. There was nowhere for me to run or hide. They would get me. I knew they would. But I couldn't let them get Jeffrey. As the pack closed in around me, I kissed the top of Jeffrey's head. Then I tossed him up into the air, and watched him whirl around in the hurricane above us.
Tears streamed down my face as the zombies glared at me menacingly. At least he'll be safe, I thought. The largest of the zombies grabbed my arms, pinning them against my back, and then he sunk his rotted teeth into my shoulder. I cried out in pain.
This is the end, I thought, and then I collapsed, blackness consuming my mind.
