Today was the first day of school. Well, for me it was. I missed the first week because I went on a hiking trip with Ingrid. Ingrid is my legal guardian. She found me in the woods in Texas when I was a baby. She's actually from Storybrooke, Maine. She was just in Texas on a hiking trip when she found me. She took me back to Storybrooke with her and homeschooled me.

Until now, that is. She told me that since it's my senior year I should socialize with other humans besides her. She also mentioned that just because I'm a vampire, it doesn't mean I shouldn't learn how to live like the humans. I was actually born a vampire, and as I grew older, I learned how to control my thirst around humans.

So here I am, running through the woods to get to Storybrooke High. I left the cabin early to go for a morning hunt just to be safe. I finally made it to the school. I walked into the front office and got my schedule.

I looked at it and saw that I had AP English 4 with Ms. Mills. That was my first class of the day. So I made my way to her room, figuring she would be some single, old lady who had a bunch of cats. Boy, was I wrong. I opened the door and the first thing I smell is apples and cinnamon. The scent was so strong that my fangs came out.

I could even hear the sound of a heartbeat. I looked up and saw a beautiful brunette. If my heart was actually beating, it would've stopped at the sight of her. She looked up and spoke.

"Hello, who are you?"

"Danielle. Danielle Carter."

She looked down at some papers, and said, "Well Ms. Carter. It seems you've missed the entire first week of school."

"Yes Ms. Mills. I was on a hiking trip with Ingrid."

Somehow, I could speak without a lisp even though my fangs were out. I was fine until she stood up and walked over to me. We were so close that I could hear the blood running through her veins.

"Well, you have a lot of catching up to do. You can take a seat now, Ms. Carter" she said.

I wasn't sure if I should sit close to her desk, or at the very back of the classroom. Maybe if I sit right by her desk, I'll get used to her scent. I finally take my seat right in front of her desk as she sits down at hers.

I could still hear the brunette's heart pounding in her chest, so I put my head down on the desk and covered my ears. It didn't help much considering I could hear things from a mile away. That still didn't stop me from trying though.

I heard Ms. Mills ask if I was alright through my arms that I used to cover my ears. I told her I was fine and that I just had a migraine. She offered to walk me to the nurse for some medicine, but I declined. I sat that way until the bell rang. I lifted my head and sat up straight in my desk as students started filing in.

Finally the tardy bell rang and Ms. Mills got up and closed the door. She started speaking, but I was hardly listening. I was just staring at her until she motioned for me to come stand in front of the class. Great. Of course she wanted me to introduce myself.

I got up and walked over to her. I stood there and just looked down at my feet. " Ms. Carter, why don't you tell us something about yourself", she said.

I finally looked up at the class and spoke. "Well, I'm Danielle. Most people just call me Dani. I've been homeschooled until this year. I like to go hiking quite often. Any questions?"

A student raised their hand. I knew I shouldn't have asked.

"Why are your eyes red?"

Shit. I guess they turned red the second I could smell Ms. Mills.

"Um, they change depending on my mood..."

I went and sat down in my seat and stared at the surface of my desk. Ms. Mills was going over a power point but I was hardly focused on what she said. After a few minutes, I decided to look up and stare at her for half the class. I guess she could feel me staring, because she turned around and looked right at me. I immediately looked down at my desk again.

A few minutes later, she handed out the homework. Right after she finished handing the papers out, the bell rang. I shot up out of my seat and was just about to leave when I heard Ms. Mills call my name.

I turned around and looked at her. What could she possibly want from me? "Yes, Ms. Mills?" I asked.

"Would you mind staying after school so I can catch you up on last week's assignments?"

"Of course. I'm sure Ingrid won't mind if I'm late for our short evening hike."

And with that, I was out the door and on to my next class.
