Ch. 1: Blackness

The hearth's beating warmth, prickles along my spine sending up a shiver of delight. I lay sprawled across the dusty floor, eyes towards the never ending night sky. I spin my pencil, weaving it through my fingertips in an endless dance. Thoughts float in and out of my consciousness in a tiring game of hide and seek.

"Lyla!" "Yes Ma?" I grumble. "Those bloody possums are back again! Rummaging through my hard earned garden. Would you mind chasing them out dear?" "Sure," I sigh. "Be back in a moment." I slip my notepad in my coat and shuffle out the back.

Whistling and skipping through the weeds, I can't help but grin through the limitless open space. "Woohoo!" I shout, tumbling through dry foxtails. I giggle at the petals that tickle my nose. I untie my bun and shake it all out, cartwheeling through the night. I probably imagined it, but I could of sworn I saw a glimpse of something out in the distance. I narrowed my eyes to get a good look, but saw nothing. "Interesting", I trotted down the hillside.

After what seems like eternity, there really was nothing out there. So I plopped down on the dried dirt and sought to the sky for ideas. Long graceful strokes began to flow, and soon a vivid black and gray scene appeared out of the blankness. I was quite impressed actually so I ripped it out and dedicated it anyone who needed it the most. And with that I was off, wandering back to the cozy, rickety cottage I call home.
