The Romantic One

Prologue

The drive to work was the same as usual. The outside weather always seemed to keep it's tradition of being gray and dull in my small town. I'd be fine with it, except for the fact that there's nothing else to look for here, the last thing this place needed was crappy weather too.

Soon enough I reached my work building. I parked the car in my spot, which was relatively close to the front doors.

"I can't believe they still haven't changed the name on my parking spot!" I say as I stare at the name of 'Iodine' rather than Adeline. Who the hell would name their child after an element of a periodic table?

As I walk through the big steal doors I greet the receptionist Sarah and ask about her baby. She just came back from a maternity leave and I can see right through her eyes how much she already misses little Cole. Her and her husband are a perfect fit, and the new addition to their family really completes them.

I hop onto the elevator and press the third floor, which is the highest floor in this building. I work for a small architecture studio that is really blooming, and I couldn't be more grateful for this job. The only problem is that sometimes I feel like I'll never leave this small town.

I walk straight to my desk before I hear someone calling me, I turn around and see Jesse, my co-worker.

"Hey girl! Did you hear the buzz? Apparently the boss is making a big announcement at today's meeting. Wonder what it is? I just hope it's nothing pathetic like last time when he announced we were switching vending machines! That man can't get me all buzzed and then leave me dry."

I laugh at her words, she has always been energetic.

"No, actually I just got in, but that's awesome. Maybe he heard back from the company about the New York City construction building? Did he tell you anything about that?" I ask.

"He didn't mention a thing to me," she shrugged and then left when someone called her.

I made my way to the desk and settled in. Jesse and Travis, my boss, were engaged. It's funny because they were complete opposites- she's so hyper and he is a really down to earth guy. But I guess it's true what they say, opposites attract, and I couldn't be happier for the two of them.

Soon enough it was time for the meeting.

"Hello everybody and thank's for coming. So, as some of you already know I have big news to deliver. The Collins company chose us to make the project for their new building in New York!" Travis said.

We all started cheering! A gig like designing and supervising a huge multinational company like the Collins Inc. could completely change our clientele.

Travis cleared his throat, "All right, all right. Settle down people. I'm not done. Anyways, the CEO demands that I send someone up there to supervise the whole thing and act as a mediator between their demands and what we have planned. Whoever wants to go can come to me with a request and I'll evaluate the choices. Thank you all, this meeting is concluded," he said before leaving the room.

This news shocked me, I knew we did a great job in presenting our ideas to the company but I never thought they would ask for one of us to supervise the project. At the same time I felt hopeful. This could be what I've been waiting for, a way to leave everything behind and move away from this town.

It's not that I don't like it here, but after 24 years I was starting to think that I'd never end up leaving.

I knew what I had to do next, I needed to find Travis and beg him for that spot! This opportunity is too big to pass up.
