No one has to be asleep to experience a nightmare. A nightmare can be a terrifying series of thoughts that occur in a persons mind during sleep, but it can also be a very unpleasant situation in which life doesn't seem to be real. A nightmare, in the sense of it happening while someone is awake, can be dangerous, lethal even. However, someone else's nightmare might just consist of the line being long at a grocery store. It's different for everyone, but a nightmare is a nightmare, regardless of the intensity.
For Mitch and Scott, their nightmare came without warning. Neither one of them saw it coming, and if they had seen it, they could have avoided it. However, life didn't give them the luxury of being safe and saving them from their nightmare. Nightmares like theirs happen all the time, every day, all over the world, but they never in a million years thought it would happen to them.

Mitch woke up in a panic, as per usual. He couldn't remember the last time he had slept the whole night without having a nightmare. The scary dreams were usually about the accident or about the events after the accident. Mitch was always afraid to fall asleep. Afraid that the dream would become reality for him again. Afraid that the dream would become so realistic for him, that he'd never wake up. He was just always so tired and scared.
His friend, Kirstin, was sitting in the chair next to his bed, asleep on her left hand. After what happened, she had decided to move into the apartment that Scott and Mitch shared so Mitch wouldn't be lonely. He, of course, refused at first, just wanting to move somewhere else and forget about his home, but Kirstin insisted. He wanted to resent her for it, but he couldn't considering that she had been nice enough to leave her home and come stay with him.
Mitch sat up from his sleeping position, brushing his fingers through his short hair to move it into place. He didn't move for the next few minutes. He just sat on his bed with his head resting against both of his palms. He told himself that once he counted to 3, he would get up and begin his day.
1...
Another day with no laughs.
2...
Another day with no happiness.
3...
Another day with no Scott.
Mitch sighed loudly, standing up from his bed and rubbing his eyes with his knuckles. Hard enough to begin seeing stars.
For the past 4 months, Mitch was without Scott. They weren't attached at the hip like they normally were. They didn't have each other all the time. Mitch went to visit Scott, of course, but it wasn't like Scott could talk back. He hoped that Scott could hear him. He hoped that in whatever dimension Scott was in, that he could hear Mitch perfectly. No one was ever sure, though.
Scott kept Mitch sane, but most of all, happy. The two boys were completely enamored with each other and they have been since high school. The love between them could be described as "two horny 16 year old boys who just can't keep their hands off of each other", but even before they were boyfriends, they were best friends first.
Mitch started walking towards his bedroom door, but accidentally kicked Kirstin's chair in the process. He still had black spots in his vision from rubbing his eyes a little too rough. Kirstin gasped loudly, scaring herself awake.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to wake you," Mitch said in a hushed tone. Kirstin smirked and then yawned loudly, "no, it's fine. I needed to get up anyways. We have a meeting today remember?"
Mitch sullenly chuckled and took a sharp breath in, not letting it out until he couldn't hold it any longer. The head of RCA has been bugging the group to have a meeting since the accident, but Mitch sorely refused. He didn't want to have anything to do with Pentatonix, especially if Scott wasn't going to be a part of it. However, the wait had gone on long enough. It's been almost 5 months and it didn't seem as if things were getting better, so changes and decisions were to be made.
