Note: This takes place during that four-month period that they stayed at the beach.
Yuu took inventory of the food they had left in the barn the group had chosen to camp out in. They chosen it big and spacious, leaving enough room for everyone, though the girls had chosen to stick together. The boys, not understanding why, assumed it was a girl's thing. It was also abandoned and secluded, making it harder to be found.
After counting up their cans and non-perishables, Yuu knew they needed more food. They only had enough for another week at most. If they were lucky, they'd find more in some old houses, or something killable and edible.
Standing up from the box that contained their rations, Yuu stretched, looking through the cracks of the barn. From the little light coming in, he believed it was near sundown. Usually everyone started to coming in for bed once they had watched the sun sink below the horizon, but it tonight they had other plans.
The group had been on the move for a week before they had found this place. That was five days ago. Since then, they had all been kind of distant and quiet with one another. The girls seemed to always speak in hushed voices to one another. Often times, Kimiziki would be lost in thought, thinking of his sister who was still in custody of the Moon Demon Company. Makoto hadn't spoken much either. He seemed to be silently grieving the loss of his comrades. As for Mika, no one was too sure. A vampire traveling with six humans? It put five of them on edge, Yuu being the exception. He trusted Mika. He knew Mika wouldn't harm them. And, despite all their worries, no one had mentioned Yuu's little incident.
"Hey, Yuu!" Yoichi cried from outside. Yuu ran out to see what the trouble was. There, he saw his friend carrying an arm full of logs, though they seemed to slipping from his arms. "Help."
Yuu took half the logs from his arms. "What are you doing?"
"Shinoa and Mitsuba thought it's be a good idea to have a bonfire tonight since everyone's been so quiet. I agreed to go get the wood while they went out to find something."
Yuu raised an eyebrow. "Look for what?"
Yoichi shrugged, continuing his journey to wherever the girls had said. There, they found Kimizuki pulling an old log over to sit on and two buckets that had been flipped upside down. Makoto was also there, attempting to start a fire in a ring of stones.
"Where's Mika?" Yuu asked them, looking around for their vampire friend.
"He said he went searching for something," Makoto answered.
"Did he say what?"
"No, but he went in that direction," he said, pointing west.
"The girls went north," Yoichi pointed out.
Yuu nodded, a little suspicious of their actions. Then again, they did go in different directions, so they wouldn't get into a fight. And, as if on cue, they heard Shinoa shouting from afar. The four guys turned to see Shinoa running toward them with a bag in her hand. Mitsuba followed after, though she wasn't running. She too had a bag in her hand.
"Guys, we found marshmallows!" the shorter girl cheered.
"Good for you," Makoto commented. "Now lower your voice."
Despite his tone, Shinoa smiled, saying no more. Mitsuba caught up, setting the other bag down. Yuu peered in, seeing more of the sugary snacks. Looking over at Makoto and his failing attempts of making a fire, Mitsuba took the lighter and started it herself. Within minutes, there was a burning fire.
Everyone who was at the campsite settled down on one of the seating arrangements. The heat from the flames began to warm them as the sun began to set and the night turned cold. Not long after the sun had set, they heard a pair of footsteps along the shore. Everyone turned to see Mikaela returning before resuming their marshmallow making. Yuu, on the other hand, focused on his friend.
