Emily was reading in the park, her favourite part of the day.  Nothing said reading in the park on a bright summer’s day like a book and a small picnic. She was enjoying her last day of her summer holidays before the madness of starting sixth form. Being organised had it upsides, like the fact she could sit undisturbed reading and generally watching the world go by.

She was so enamoured with the book that at first she didn’t notice the shadow that crossed her path. It was the prickly feeling of having someone stare at you that broke into her reverie. She looked up to see a young man dressed in black leathers, he seemed unfazed of the heat despite the day being recorded as the hottest day that summer.

He seemed to be shivering despite the heat and his skin appeared waxy in the sunshine.  His eyes appeared a little too big for his face, and he had a few days stubble.

“Did you drop this?” he asked, his voice though a deep bass seemed strained.  He held up a small gold chain between his fingers. She felt at her neck and realised the chain was hers.

“Wow, thanks! I hadn’t realised it had come off.”

“No problem, here.”

He knelt down towards her his fingers outspread. His gaze met hers and she found herself immobile.

“You do want the necklace don’t you?” he asked.

“Yes.” She heard herself say, although she felt distanced, as if she wasn’t  in charge of her own body.

“Come with me then.”

He held his hands out towards her and she gripped them with her own. Her book tumbled off her lap into the grass, abandoned and forgotten as she was led out of the park.
