Jeffery Woods

We were all so young. Just teenagers. He seemed kind, caring. I never excepted him to do what he did. Nobody did...

The teacher came in and introduced two new kids.
"Attention, class," she knocked on her old wooden desk, "I'd like you to meet Jeffrey and Liu Woods. They're your new classmates starting today," she turned to them, "You two can go sit at the empty seats in front of (Y/N) in the (F/C) t-shirt," she said pointing to me. I waved shyly and gave an awkward smile.

They seemed like average boys. Jeffrey had blue eyes, Liu had green ones. They both had hazel-brown hair, with Jeffrey's being just a tad lighter. Liu was also about an inch taller, with a slightly bigger build.

They walked down the aisle of desks, coming to a stop in front of mine. Liu looked over giving me a friendly-yet-nervous smile, as they both sat down in front of me. The class went on as usual, taking notes and such. I looked at the new kids a little, to see what they were doing. Liu looked a bit nervous like something was bothering him, but for some reason Jeff looked strangely... happy. Like he was oddly pleased about something. I didn't question their behaviour much in my mind, and just went back to work.

The time came for second class, not much different happened. We all went to our lockers, got our textbooks and notes, then headed for the next class. The teacher sat Jeff and Liu at some previously empty seats and continued his everyday lectures.

For some reason, I just couldn't shake this feeling that something was off about Jeff. He just seemed... I don't know how to describe it.. it's like when you can tell someone is hiding something, but you just can't figure out what that something is. And he was happy about his little odd secret. Brushing it off, I just tried to go along the rest of the day normally.

When I got home I went up to my room which was on the second floor, and dropped my backpack onto the bed. I got out some homework and started working on it. Soon after, there was a knock at my door. Replying, I gave a quick "come in" and my mom opened the door. She peeked her head in and began speaking.

"The couple across the street invited us to their son, Billy's, birthday party, it'll be on Saturday and we're going. You remember him, right? He goes to your sister's school," she told me.

"But mom, I have better stuff to do than to go to some kid's party!" I protested.

"(Y/N), we need to show that we want to be around our neighbours, plus, I heard they also invited the new boys who just moved in a few houses down," she teased, giving me a wink.

"Fine. But only because you're making me," I reluctantly agreed.

She walked out, closing my door behind her. Why did she always make me do this?

I finished up my homework, answering the last few questions when mom called me down for dinner. Dad was already at the table, along with my little sister, Alyssa. She was only 9. We ate supper and listened to my dad tell yet another story about the 'crazy people at work'. I never showed it, but I actually liked his stories. Just another simple enjoyment in my life. We finished up, and mom grabbed everyone's plates and set them beside the sink. Alyssa and I packed up the leftovers and placed them in the fridge.

I headed back upstairs to take a shower. I walked to the bathroom, undressed and stepped in the bath tub, turning the water on. I let the steamy water hit my back as I relaxed my muscles. I always thought in the shower, I didn't really know why, it just always seemed so peaceful. I didn't think of anything in particular. School, friends, family, the phone I wanted, just random things. I wet a cloth and soaped my body, soon rinsing it off completely, I decided to enjoy the humid shower a bit longer. My mind eventually wandered to the new kids. They seemed like nice people, they weren't rude and uptight like some people at school were. Maybe we could be acquaintances, or even friends someday.

I turned the shower off, ending my thought. Stepping out, I grabbed the towel hanging on a nearby hook. I wrapped myself in it and walked to my room, right across the hall. I slid into some (S/F/C) pyjamas with (F/A)s on them. I grabbed my tooth brush and paste, going back into the bathroom.

I quickly brushed my teeth getting off all the day's plaque build up. I rinsed my mouth and headed for my room once again. I turned my bed lamp on, put the dental supplies back on top of my dresser, turned off my main light, and hopped into bed. I tuned off my lamp and set my head onto my pillow, letting sleep soon take me away.

Beep beep beep!
My alarm clock went off. I got up, brushing my hair and soon after my teeth. I picked out an simple outfit to wear, just some casual, everyday clothes. I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs.

Mom had already gotten breakfast started. Eggs and toast. I slung my backpack around a chair, took out my lunch bag and threw in a few snacks and a sandwich. After, I grabbed a plate out and sat with Mom and Aly at the table. We just ate quietly. Nobody was mad, or seemed like they didn't want to talk. I guess we just had things on our minds.

I checked my watch and placed my dishes in the sink, heading towards the front door.
"Bye Mom! See you later!" I called to her.

"Have a nice day at school, bye sweetie!" She replied.

And off I went to the bus stop. I was expecting Randy and his gang to be there to try and hit on me or steal some change again, but they were nowhere to be seen. At least I hadn't missed the bus like yesterday, mom was not very happy to have to drive me. I stood near some other kids. The bus pulled up and we got on the soon to be crowded vehicle. It wasn't a very eventful ride, but I heard some people whispering something from behind me.

"Did you hear? Randy and his gang got their asses kicked!"

"No way, by who???"

"I heard those new kids did it! One of them was taken away by the police earlier!"

So that's what happened, huh?

They bus arrived at school after a while, and everyone went about their day normally. I couldn't help but glance over at Jeff every so often. He must not be coping so well. He looked really unhappy. Almost the opposite of his expression from the previous day. It looked like he just needed someone to tell him it'll be all okay. Maybe I could help.

Our second period teacher let us out early for lunch. As I was getting my lunch bag, I had a thought.

Jeff's new locker was only a few away from mine, and the kids in between us weren't out of their classes yet... I collected all the confidence I could manage, closed my locker and walked over.

"Hey, Jeff?" I asked.

He looked over putting on a probable fake smile, "Hi..? (Y/N), right?"

"Yeah... um, nice to meet you," I confirmed. He nodded.

"Um, if you don't mind me asking... is something bothering you?" I curiously said, hoping he wouldn't think I was nosy.

"....I'm... fine," he said, obviously lying.

"Oh. You just seemed a little bit upset, so I thought I'd ask..." I told him my reasoning, going along with it.

"Thank you," he gave me a smile. A real one this time. It was welcoming and kind. I hadn't noticed before, but looking up at him, I could see he had the loveliest blue orbs. I looked into them in awe, as if in a trance.

A few seconds went by.

"Uh, hello? Earth to (Y/N)?" He said waving a hand in between us. It snapped me out of space.

"Oh! Uh, sorry... just spacing out.." I told him, scratching the back of my head, "well, have a nice day, then!" I mentioned awkwardly turning around and heading towards the cafeteria for lunch.

"You too," he got the last words in quietly.

I glanced back for a split second, he was softly giggling. Way to go, Ms. Awkward. Just had to go doing what I did best, didn't I?
