Chapter 1: The First Encounter
"And then Princess Rose turned into a fairy and flew away from the alien!"
"Ella, be more realistic," I say with a blank expression while my cousin's face drops. "Princess Rose must have eaten a magic flower or have been secretly related to fairies all her life in order to turn into a fairy at that particular moment."
Ella's face lights up again and she continues to swing around her Barbie as if it could fly. I love the fact that even though she is almost seven, her passion to imagine is the same as when she was four.
"Mel, can I please turn on the Play Station?" I hear a nagging voice from across the room ask me.
"One sec," I tell Ella as I walk over to the couch where Collin is staring at me with pathetic pleading eyes. Sense he is ten (only four years younger than I), he never gets excited about the games I play when I come over to babysit. "We still have an opening for whoever wants to play the alien," I offer.
"No. What I want to do is go on my Play Station," Collin says with a bitter tone. His blond buzz cut is the exact same shade as Ella's long, thin hair (perfect for braiding). It's funny how they can look so similar, yet act so different. I guess it'll change as they grow up.
"Why don't we all play a board game? Oh, how about Life? I love that game," I try my best to keep the kids away from the TV at all costs. It sounds good when I say it, but really I spend most of my free time (when I'm not babysitting) watching BBCA. God bless that channel.
"What's that?" Ella asks.
"You guys don't know what Life is? Kids these days. Well, where's Miles?" I say glancing around. Miles was nothing like his step-siblings. He had a full head of thick brunette hair and liked being alone. I try including him whenever I can, but he always pushes my away. Quite literally.
"By the window doing God-knows-what," Collin retorts.
Sure enough, I see Miles sitting on top of the sofa with his head underneath the window curtain so I can only see back and legs. "Whatcha looking at, Miles?" I ask. After I wait a few seconds and get no reply, I tiptoe over to him. "Wanna play a game with us? C'mon I know, deep down, you're just dying to play!" I say it with my nicest voice. Nothing. Will he always be this anti-social? It's kind of sad to think about. "Deep, deep down?"
Looking closer at Miles, I see that he's shaking. Is he mad at me? Giving in, I lift the curtain and peek my head out the window to see what's more fun to look at than myself.
A surge of energy rushes through me because I know exactly what I'm looking at. I'm in the zone between happy and pissing my pants. I should be more scared, I think. Instead, I keep staring at the creature and give a smile of disbelief. It's real. And if it's real, then he's real. I definitely did not expect this.
"Miles," I say confidently, "Don't blink. Blink, and you die."
"It...moves." It is the first time I've heard Miles talk all evening.
"Yeah, it's a Weeping Angel, I think. Unless it's someone playing a trick. Although I don't know who would do that, and I hope it's not. I hope it's real. Actually, it's probably better if it is someone fooling us because I'm responsible for you guys, and.....Oh, God." It just struck me. I don't know how the hell I'm going to stop the Angel, and I have three kids to worry about.
