After what he learned that day, Zack couldn't bring himself to go back and see her. She had food, she would be alright without him. At least for now. When he got home he went straight to his room and started pacing the floor. When his dad came and yelled at him to stop pacing and go do something constructive he went outside and walked the path to his garage. Wow, he thought, I have a human being in there against her will.
He had told himself he wouldn't go in, but he wanted to. He wanted to see her, to learn about her. So he opened the door quietly, she was there, asleep. She was beautiful, he realized for the first time, sitting down a few feet away. Her skin was pale, her hair so blond it was white, even her lips were pale. Her brows were high, everything about her suggested gracefulness. A true goddess.
When she began to stir he pushed himself to his feet. Her eyes popped open, eyes of darkness in a face of light.
"m cnt ugrt." Said Fey through the cloth.
"Oh, sorry." Said Zack pulling off her cloth. "Just so you know, no one can hear you out here."
"I couldn't eat with that on you know."
"Right, um, sorry." He said and he could feel himself blushing.
"Can I go to the washroom?"
"No. Just wait here." Said Zack.
"What else would I do!" Yelled Fey in frustration, she had been planning to make a run for it if he had agreed to bring her to the washroom.
A few minutes later Zack returned with a bucket. He placed it by her feet.
"You can figure out how to use that." He said and left.Wow, thought Fey, just wow. She got the star treatment of a bucket. Well it was better than nothing, and she really did need to go.
It was a long night again. Fey had slept in the day and couldn't sleep that night. Also there were noises coming from outside, and Fey couldn't help but imagine the worst. She had always had an overactive imagination, and given the circumstances it was no surprise that she was imagining terrible things.
Zack on the other hand, spent the night going over the day in his head. The rumors at school, the look on Bailey's face, Fey's beauty when she slept. He soon found himself taking another nighttime stroll. Not to the garage this time, he'd been out there
to often these past two days, instead he walked the the river that ran across his yard, it was fast moving, even in the winter it didn't freeze. After starring for a while he walked home and slept, but not peacefully. The next morning Zack woke late, having forgotten to set his alarm. He was almost late for school. Because of this he didn't go visit Fey before leaving. She would be fine, he thought. After all she still had bread, and she was wearing her coat.
Fey woke later, it was dark in the garage, hardly any light was shining through the window. She guessed it was midday. She tried yet again to free herself but gave up quite quickly. The rest of her day was spent day dreaming of home and wondering about all the people she loved.
Zack's day however was not spent daydreaming, quite the opposite. He spent another stressful day trying to act innocent. Today Bailey wasn't even at school. Everyone in the same grade as Fey was summoned down to the office one at a time to be asked about Fey. By the time it was Zack's turn he had his whole lie figured out. He must have been a good liar, because he was not kept long and wasn't subjected to any special tests.
By the time he got home he had a pounding headache, so he excused himself from dinner early and lied on his bed. Even though he was tired and his head hurt, he couldn't sleep. So for a long while he just lay there in the growing dark staring at the ceiling.
This was the first day Zack hadn't visited Fey, and she found herself surprised to find that she missed him. Never before in her life had she been truly alone for a whole day. Even when she was away from her parents, she was always with someone, be it a friend or a adult. But now, she was really alone, with nothing but her thoughts to keep her company. It was scary, so scary that she actually craved the company of her kidnapper.
Zack however enjoyed the sort of freeing feeling that came with avoiding Fey. Everytime he had seen her he had be wracked with guilt, but if he stayed away, he felt much better. He assumed the food would last her at least a week, if she was smart, therefor he didn't have to look at her the whole time.
But even after deciding definitely, Zack found himself missing Fey. So before he settled in to sleep that night he took the familiar route to his safe place.
Fey was awake and alert when he wandered in.
"Hi." Said Zack blandly.
Fey said nothing, just squinted at him.
"How long are you gonna keep me here?" She asked, hoping against hope that her assumed answer was wrong.
"I don't know... forever, maybe." Said Zack thinking about it for the first time. He had been so busy keeping her hidden day to day, he had never really stopped to consider long term arrangements. Although he supposed he'd have to keep her until he moved out in a few years, then he'd make a decision as to what to do.Fey's heart sunk, she had expected that, but it didn't make it any easier to accept.
"Why?" Fey asked. 'Why did you kidnap me? If it's ransom you want my parents will pay, I know they will."
"That's not it." Said Zack, he wished it was that simple.
"Then what? Why am I here?" Asked Fey in desperation.
"Goodnight." Said Zack, almost running to leave.
"Yeah, as if." Fey muttered to the closed door.Zack had left in a hurry because She had asked the unanswerable question. He didn't know why, but he didn't want her to leave.
