The Journey of Forgiveness

By: Jennifer Tarragano

Prologue: The Mistake

Emilie Webster looked at the tiny stick again. “No the tests are wrong, I cannot be pregnant!” She exclaimed at the pink pregnancy test lying on the sink beside her. She had taken 4 different tests, each with the same response: ++. She was pregnant alright, and by her calculations, she was 3 months along. How could she let this happen to herself? She thought. She knew right from wrong, that sex before marriage was a sin, had morals, after all she’d been forced to attend church throughout her entire life, even after she had turned 18. Her father, the pastor of their church had made it his personal mission for his children to be perfect examples of what Christian teenagers and adults should be. He also made his children attend church, saying ‘If you live in this house, you will go to church’. What would he say now that she was with child? She didn’t know, but she wasn’t ready to find out. She had made one mistake, granted it was a huge mistake, but no sin was worse than the other, right? In 18 ½ years, she had lived according to her dad’s rules, and 3 months ago, she slipped up. He couldn’t hate her for that, could he?

She had been dating her boyfriend Ezekiel Adams for 4 years, and in those 4 years they had kissed a few times, nothing extremely inappropriate, until that fateful night 3 months earlier. He had gotten his acceptance letter and full ride scholarship to Harvard Law School, and after they had gotten back from their favorite restaurant to celebrate, the night took an unexpected turn. They ended up doing more than just kissing, and as soon as it had happened, Emilie knew she had done something wrong. She had been so stupid to fall into bed with Zek, after all, he too was saving himself until marriage. Granted, they had talked about getting married to each other in the near future, but Emilie knew that Ezekiel really wanted to go to law school and so she told Zek that they would wait until his schooling was done. Both Emilie and Ezekiel believed that God would let them last if they were truly meant to be together. Now, with her being pregnant, they had no choice. Surely her father would demand they marry immediately. His parents as well, as his dad was a decon for the church. How could she let Zek give up everything that he held to be so important in his life for her and this baby. How could she ask that of him? She couldn’t, that was the plain and simple truth, he meant more than that to her. She didn’t want him to resent her or the baby for having to give up his full ride scholarship to the best law school in the country.

That night Emilie laid in bed staring at the ceiling. Her mind was wandering in to so many places that they probably should never have been, she didn’t believe in abortion, but she was even contemplating that. All she knew was that she couldn’t tell her parents or Zek, otherwise, everyone’s life would fall apart because she decided to make a stupid choice and have sex with Zek. This was all her fault! However, she was going to fix it, and she didn’t think anyone would miss her too much to care about the way she decided to handle the situation. At least this way, she was sparring Zek and her parents, even if it meant hurting herself to accomplish it.
