When I was in 6th grade I LOVED to read, that’s not entirely true, I still love to read! One teacher tried to stop our classes from reading what we wanted to. We all completely ignored her. This is the story of that class.
The first day of school went normally. We went to all of our classes, introduce ourselves to the other students and our teachers, -My reading teacher ignored that part. She always got names wrong- learned what we needed to have for the second day of school, pretty average. The next day we talked about rules. Standard, right? Not in my reading class. Our teacher old us the list of books she ruled to be “Unfit” for our class. I didn’t care at first, but one day it just got ridiculous. None of the girls were allowed to bring in the 4th twilight book, for obvious reasons. We weren’t allowed to read/bring in any graphic novels, even the ones that were for loan at the library. All of these books about riots and other things were banned because they were too graphic. At the same time we were reading a book about The Holocaust. Eventually all of the class got fed up, so me and some other kids tried to beat the system.
The first thing a majority of kids did was get a kindle. They were cool and you couldn’t see what others were reading, but because these were in black and white this took away from the reading experience of riot books and graphic novels. One of my best friends got the 4th twilight book and switched the cover out with the first one so that she could read it. Some other kid got the half price books in Allen to offer paper book covers to anyone who asked. I was the more vocal one. Shocker, right? I told people about our little rebellion and got more people to join in on it. Eventually our teacher just gave up. To this day she lets every book in history into her class. Whether it’s My Little Pony or The History Of Wars (With Pictures!)
