When dark, sullen first year Acario Esculenta is sorted into Slytherin he's overlooked and not seen as uncommon. That is...until he lays his eyes on something he'll wish he never saw...
"Acario Esculenta," Professor McGonagall announced. Heads turned towards a small, shiny black haired boy with sunken dark eyes and heavy brows. He strode towards the stool with purpose, set the talking hat on his head and glowered at the watching school, almost as if waiting for someone to wrench him off the stool and send him back home. No one did, of course, and when the sorting hat announced him a Slytherin there was meagre applause and the sorting of the first years continued. When the last student had been called - Willows, Blaire - and had been placed in Ravenclaw, Hermione turned to Harry and Ron with an excited expression on her face. "Bloody hell Hermione, don't explode on us," Ron was hungry, and, therefore easily irritable. "Sorry it's just...just.. didn't you know..." Hermione's explanation faded out at the sight of Harry and Ron's faces. "Well Hermione what is it?" Harry was also hungry and easily irritated. "Honestly, don't you two read?" Hermione snapped back at them sarcastically. "The name 'Esculenta' is the not-so-well-known name of one of the most established Dark families of all time!" She sat back, not expecting to see Ron and Harry staring blankly back at her. "Well, what about Vold- you-know-who? I mean, he's the darkest wizard isn't he?" Asked Harry, obviously as bewildered as Ron. "No Harry, Amari Esculenta existed before You-Know-Who! Some say.." She lowered her voice now. "Some say that You-Know-Who was Amari's apprentice sort of thing." But seeing Harry and Ron's shocked faces she hurried on. "But that's just a rumour I saw in a book, in the-" "Library!" Harry and Ron finished, smirking at each other. Hermione rolled her eyes at the two and turned to listen to Dumbledore's speech as the great hall faded into silence.
