Diana sat in her bed and sighed. Living with her stepsisters and stepmother was awful. It was a nightmare. Every household chore that had to be done was given to her. Even the chores that were her sisters' always ended up being done by Diana. Every problem that they had was fixed by Diana. Though she puts in so much effort everyday to complete these tasks, not one of them give her the respect she's earned.

They lived in a huge mansion, just the four of them. After her father and mother died, life in the house died with them. When Diana was a little girl, her father used to throw magnificent parties almost every night with the most mysterious people in her opinion. They always wore masks and long fancy dresses and colorful suits. Diana thought it was like a dream. She always looked forward to the parties since she got to stay up late and talk to everyone, learning about their lives and what it's like to be an adult. Her mother would always read her stories before bed. She wanted to keep Diana's imagination alive. She also taught her to be kind and courteous to every, no matter how they treat you. Diana kept this advice very dear to her heart as it was one of the last things her mother ever said to her.

The house itself was filled with marvelous paintings and decorations. It was like a child's imagination, which excited Diana greatly. Each room had a different theme. Diana's room was blue, her favorite color. The living room was a soft yellow that always made Diana sing You are My Sunshine to her dad.

But once her mother died, this all changed. Her father was desperate to have another lady figure in the house so Diana could grow up to be well mannered, so he remarried as quick as he could to a woman named Ivy. Her name was fitting since all of her actions spread like poison. This caused everyone's life changed completely. Ivy thought that the parties were to long and demanded them to be shorter. She got what she wanted, so the parties grew shorter and shorter each time until they finally stopped. The awful woman took down all of the playful decorations and replaced them with grey statues and other ugly green decor. The house became dark and still, it was not a place for children. Diana was told not to touch anything as she could break something valuable and that she shall remain in her room all day until supper. Her father told Ivy that he was not going to lock his only child in a room all day like a prisoner. She did not care though since she had to control all of the power in the house. If any of it was taken away from her, the one who took it would be thoroughly punished.

And the worst of all, the new stepmother brought two daughters along with her. They were older than Diana, which just gave them another excuse to be mean and rude. Diana was always raised to be nice and kind to every living creature, but she could not ignore the fact of how unattractive the two sisters were. Not just in their physical appearance, their personalities were ugly, too. The one sister, Violet, could not stop looking at herself in the mirror and saying how beautiful she was. Violet was also the meanest of the sisters. She would hit Diana and pull at her hair for no apparent reason, besides jealousy of course. Diana was much prettier than them and was kinder, too. The other sister, Grace, was very unaware of, well, everything. She's constantly running into walls and chairs and not paying attention to anything. She is the nicer of the sisters, though. That's only because she doesn't have enough sense in her to be mean to Diana. Grace only follows Violet's orders. She's just Violet's little sidekick.

This is what Diana called life now. Her stepmother made her change schools so she had little to no friends. She was miserable. Soon, her dad died, too. The last piece of happiness was gone in her life, and everything was about to change.

"Hey! My eyeliner is missing again! What did you do with it?" Diana screamed at her stepmother downstairs.

"I didn't do anything! Ask your sisters," she screamed back.

Diana walked down the long hallway to her first sister's, Violet, room and knocked on the door.
