Chapter 14
"How was England?" Casey asked curiously as I swept the floor of the barn.
"Uneventful." I shrugged.
"I'm surprised you were awake so early, you got back pretty late last night." Casey commented.
"Jet lag." I replied. "It's always best coming back this way because you fall asleep early and wake up early."
"Ah." Casey nodded. "Have you talked to Daniel yet?"
I felt my insides flip at the mention of his name.
All I wanted to do was talk to him but I couldn't stop thinking about what Gerry and Tristan drilled into my brain, that the Aubrey family was bad news.
"No, why would I?" I frowned, deciding just to play it cool.
"Oh... Oh I dunno. I thought you guys like, started to have a thing or something." Casey shrugged. "He asked about you pretty much every day while you were gone."
"Oh." I replied casually, desperately hoping she'd go on.
"Why haven't you talked to him yet?" Casey asked curiously.
"Because I haven't been in the country for more than twelve hours basically and I've spent a majority of those asleep." I laughed, looking up at her. "I'll see him eventually."
Casey just nodded.
"So is that like... A thing?" She asked, raising her eyebrows.
"I really have no idea. He kissed me once. That doesn't necessarily mean anything." I laughed. "I've kissed lots of people without intentions of taking it any further."
"Whatever you want to believe." Casey laughed. "But you better think fast."
"Why would I need to think fast?" I frowned, leaning the broom against the wall as I finished sweeping.
"Good morning!" A cheerful voice said, getting louder as the person walked into the barn.
My eyes widened.
"Oh hey! You're back." Daniel said happily, his attention on me.
"Yep." I replied simply before quickly ducking out of the barn and searching for something else to keep my entertained with.
I was extremely glad that I took time to look extra cute today.
With a pair of loose, ripped jeans rolled up at the bottom and a black v-neck t-shirt, I was presentable but not enough to the point that I'd want Daniel seeing me after a week.
"Hey, I've actually got a question for you." Daniel said, following me around the corner of the barn.
"Hm?" I asked casually, not looking at him as I walked over to collect the old pile of ripped bridles that never got taken care of.
"Do you want to maybe go out with me tonight?" Daniel asked hopefully.
"I would totally love to but I'm pretty jet lagged... I was planning on getting to sleep early." I said with a soft smile.
"Lunch then maybe?" Daniel raised his eyebrows.
"I've gotta work." I shook my head.
"Another evening this week when you aren't so tired?" Daniel offered as he followed me back towards the barn.
"Um, no, no I don't think so." I said softly, turning to look at him.
A frown crossed his face as his eyes looked at me carefully.
