"He likes you."
Lily slammed her locker door shut in surprise at the sound of Elissa's voice. Her friend looked at her excitedly, her blue eyes appearing brighter than normal.
"What?" Lily asked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Who are you talking about?"
Elissa pointed down the crowded campus hallway. "Him."
Lily looked down the hallway at the mystery boy her friend was looking at. Sure enough, his eyes met hers almost instantly. Blushing, she looked away. "Just because he's staring at me doesn't mean he likes me," she said softly. She slowly began walking the opposite way towards the main building.
"Well, what else could it mean?" Elissa scoffed, dumbfounded by the idea that someone could be staring without experiencing any sort of romantic attraction.
"Maybe he could hear you talking about him but he's too nice to come over and tell you to mind your own business," Lily responded curtly. Elissa had it easy; she didn't understand. In the short five months that she had been on campus already two different guys had come vying for her. It was like something out of a young adult romance novel. Lily couldn't get mad by this; Elissa was gorgeous. It was natural for her to get this kind of attention.
"Oh no. Don't you go comparing yourself to me." Elissa's voice suddenly snapped her out of her thoughts. "I'm just worried about you, that's all."
Lily sighed as she continued walking down the hallway. "You don't need to be worried about me."
"Well, I am." Elissa retorted stubbornly. "Come on, Lily, you've got to put yourself out there more! You're so reserved now."
Lily laughed. "When did you become such a party girl?"
Elissa shushed her. "Let me finish. You're super quiet nowadays, you rarely leave our room anymore, you stopped wearing makeup-"
"Are you calling me a prude?""No!" Elissa laughed. "You just seem a little different from the girl I went to high school with." She stopped and turned around to look at her best friend. "Is it Logan?"
"What?" Lily scoffed, taken aback.
"Just answer the question."
"No, it's not Logan. I haven't spoken to him in a couple months," she replied.
"Is it your mom?"
"Elissa!" Lily finally snapped. "It's not her either, I'm fine. I just grew up, is all. Can you drop this, please?"
Elissa sighed and continued walking. "If you say so," she said quietly.
