Shopping for maternity swim wear can be more fun than you might imagine. Even though your body is going through many changes, you don’t have to worry, because maternity swimwear is designed to cater to your changing body by enhancing your positive features and concealing any trouble spots you might have.

A swimming pool provides a perfect opportunity for prenatal exercise According to the American Pregnancy Association, swimming is the safest form of exercise for pregnant women because it helps keep muscles toned without stressing the joints, while at the same time stimulating the blood flow. Swimming is safe during all three trimester's, and it’s recommended by many experts as a daily exercise for pregnant women.

Water gives you buoyancy that helps support your body and at the same time helps in keeping you cool, a crucial factor for pregnant women. This buoyancy provides a welcome relief from the strain of having to carry extra poundage around.

Your regular swimsuit might fit fine during the first couple of months of pregnancy, but as your stomach gets bigger, you will need to shop for maternity swim wear. A regular swimsuit will oftentimes be too loose or too tight in certain areas.

For maternity swim wear, there are also a huge variety of top and bottom styles to choose from. You might find that you need more support in the top than usual, because your breasts will increase in size during your pregnancy.

Halter neck styles are also great for women with larger breasts. If you are still wearing a relatively small bra size, you might consider getting a strap less bandeau style.

A tankini comes in two pieces, just like a bikini, except that the top is longer so as to cover most or all of your bump. You can choose from among several styles with a longer top to look more like a one piece, or you can buy a suit with a shorter top for more of a bikini style look, with a gap between the top and bottom. Some maternity tankini are loose around the stomach area to allow for lots of growing room, whereas others are fitted, featuring a lot of stretchiness.

Make sure your maternity swim wear fits well and has enough room to accommodate your expanding frame. Otherwise, you'll continually be tugging and picking at the fabric and you'll never feel quite comfortable. Racer back suits are especially easy to wear, and suits with built-in bra support are essential.

If you’d like to de-emphasize your hips, wear a maternity shorts suit with low-cut leg openings that offer the most hip coverage. Go for a solid, dark color for the bottom half of your suit. Look for a suit that provides a stripe or a design along the bust area to draw the eye upward. Or instead, you could try a suit with a short skirt.

If the suit has straps, make certain they're adjustable and have adequate padding. This is particularly important for large breasts, because the straps can cut painfully into your shoulders if they're not properly padded or adjusted.

Select a suit that fits your torso properly. The straps shouldn't dig into your shoulders. If that happens, the suit is definitely too short for your torso.
