Chapter 23- Tristan's POV

As I've had such a crazy few days, I'm pretty glad to be back in the tedious routine of school. Sure it's boring, but it's better than sitting at home feeling confused, which is what I spent the weekend doing. However, despite this, I'm kind of annoyed because James has been ignoring me all day. I don't know if I've upset him or something, but he's refusing to talk to me. I shouldn't be upset about it, but I am.

Suddenly, my heart sinks as I realise that I have PE next but I've forgotten my kit. The teacher is going to kill me, and a detention is the last thing I want- I can never wait to get out of this place. Thankfully, when I confess, he isn't too bothered, but he makes me go out and stand on the field anyway. Nothing much is happening, so I find myself watching James but trying not to make eye contact with him.

The teacher gives me the task of setting out some comes, and whilst my back is turned, I suddenly hear everyone yelling. I look over, and it becomes clear that James is injured. He limps over, and I have to wince when I see how badly his knee is bleeding. The teacher turns to me. "Mr Evans, please take James to the medical room."

I sigh, but agree to. James has his arm around my shoulders, and is hopping slightly. I smirk at him. "That's quite a scrape you've got yourself into."

James rolls his eyes. "Ha ha, very funny." As tempted as I am to, even I've realised that now is not a good time to ask James why he's been ignoring me.

The school nurse gives James a familiar smile as we walk (well, hop in James' case) in. "Hello James." she greets. "I haven't seen you in here for a while."

James smiles weakly. "It's nice to see you Mrs Green." I sit awkwardly next to him on the seating, not really knowing what to do.

The nurse breaks the silence. "Who's your friend here?" she asks James.

He sighs. "Tristan. He's in my PE class."

"Hi." I say awkwardly.

The nurse smiles at me then turns back to James. "So, how did you manage this exactly?"

"I slipped on the astroturf." James admits. "Took most of the skin off." I wince just thinking about that.

The nurse nods. "I can see that. You're not the only one who's ever done that sweetheart, don't worry." She's holding a wet cloth, and she starts wiping James' knee to clean it. He winces, clearly in pain. I wish I could do something, but instead I'm just sitting here being useless. "Hmm." the nurse says. "This is pretty bad. I'm going to have to disinfect it."

James sighs. "Brilliant." I'm no doctor, so I can only assume that it's going to hurt.

As it turns out, I'm not wrong in this assumption. The nurse comes back with a fresh cloth and says "I've put rubbing alcohol on this to clean it properly. It's going to be really painful my darling, I'm sorry." Before I know it, she's looking up at me, smiling. "You might want to let him hold your hand." James looks at me pleadingly, and I can't say no. I give him a small smile, and he takes it as a cue to wrap his fingers around my palm.

"I'm ready." he says shakily.

The nurse smiles. "Ok. Take a nice deep breath for me." James does so, but as soon as she starts to clean his knee, he squeezes my hand so hard that it's almost painful. He lets out a small whimper of pain, somehow managing to squeeze my hand even tighter, and the nurse gives him a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry my lovely, I know it hurts." Finally, she finishes and wraps a bandage around James' injury. "Well done." she says. "You were so brave."

James gives me a smile, but he still doesn't let go of my hand, though he's not squeezing it as much. The nurse gives him an accident form, and sends us on our way. "Thank you." James says as soon as we get outside again.

"For what?" I ask, genuinely unsure.

James laughs weakly. "For letting me hold onto you."

I laugh with him. "It's fine." For some reason, everything feels more relaxed now. I can talk to James properly as he can't really ignore me any more. I still need to talk to him about everything, but now isn't the time. I don't want to make a mess of things again, so I'll keep quiet. James has clearly been in enough pain for one day- he doesn't need me to add to it.

Someone in the comments was asking about the song this is based off, and I managed to find a video. Apologies that it's a live one, and for the 2000sness of it 😂 The link is here, as I can't make it work 🙄 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mhTH_nijW3I
