*Kodie's POV*

Summer is drawing to an unfortunate close, and I have to start summer practice for my new school. I used to go to Woodrow Wilson, until my dad thought, in order to further my athletic career, Washington would be a better school, and its athletic program are top of the line. I'm excited to be getting out of Woodrow. along with leaving a hellish school. I'm moving with my life long best friend Kyle. The only thing that I'm not excited about is the fact that my girlfriend since the eighth grade, is staying at Woodrow because she likes it there; I don't understand why, but whatever.

I decide to get out of my bed and get ready for football practice, considering that I have to leave in ten minutes if I don't wanna be late. I put on basketball shorts, a t-shirt with the sleeves and sides cut out of, and a pair of tennis shoes. I go out to my truck, starting it up, and leave. All my football gear is already in my truck, along with my cleats. My phone goes off and displays a text from my best friend.

"Lend a brother a ride?"

I talk back through my radio in order to reply

"Yeah sure, I'll be there in 5."  I make the turn down Kyle's street and continue down to his house. My phone goes off again; this time  with a text from my girlfriend.

"Babe, hang out after practice?"

Since I'm parked waiting on Kyle. I quickly type a response

"Yeah sure just let me know."

I see Kyle walk out of his door, making sure to shut it and lock it before he leaves. He make his way to the truck, throwing his stuff in the back along with mine. He then gets in the passengers seat, and as soon as he gets in his window goes down the same as mine. I put my truck in reverse and back out of his driveway, and drive off to practice. I eventually make it out of the housing development that we both live in, and decide to cram my foot in the gas pedal causing my truck to roar. Kyle reaches over and turns on the radio, blaring one of my favorite songs "'Angel with a Shotgun" by The Cab.

*Kyle's POV*

How do I tell him? How do I tell him that his girlfriend since the eighth grade is cheating on him? I've seen some pretty sketchy things going on with her. I saw her kissing the Woodrow Wilson running back the guy that replaced Kodie. He ain't half of what Kodie is, Kodie is outright amazing while this guy is extremely mediocre. My girlfriend and sister half both told me that she has slept with this guy, and then slept with Kodie to make herself feel less guilty. I know it will ruin Kodie and hurt him incredibly, he loves her, and it would kill him to know that she has cheated on him before. Despite everything those two are, he is still in love with her. Kodie and Mackenzie, how do I put this nicely, they both love each other, but they are not everything that they seem.  I don't want to tell him now, because we are going to football practice, and he does not need to be distracted. It's not the first practice; we had assessments then a practice after,so it is not like coach needs to be impressed. I know if Kodie has anything other than football on his mind other than football during practice he gets hurt. I turn on my phone and begin to text my girlfriend. I know I'll have to tell Kodie soon, but I don't know how. I do not want to be the one responsible for breaking my best friend's heart.

He pulls into the school into the student parking lot, and park right beside our other friend that goes here. Him and I both get out and head to the field house.  The coach immediately pulls us out to have a confidential conversation as he calls it.

"Okay boys, I know that y'all are used to absolutely running Woodrow's team and I understand that I gave you two the positions of captain and co-captain. I want you two to know that you might be the best of the best in the high school football world, but I'm telling you two whatever the other coaches and I say goes. You two captains, but unlike Woodrow, you two don't own the team."

Me and Kodie exchange looks, and then we look at the coach and say in perfect unison

"Yes sir."

"Thank you, now you two go and warm up." Kodie and I both nod our heads and jog off to the rest of the team.

*Kodie's POV*

As captain I have to lead stretches, so I begin to call them out. One we finish stretching the whole team separates into groups that go for the offensive starting line, the defensive starting line, and a both starting line. Kyle and I both walk over the both category. Soon, the head coach walks over to us.

"Boys,"he stated "I want to see where this new play will go. Kodie you are about the fastest and most agile kid I've ever seen, so I want Kyle to throw the ball purposely up high and behind you, so they will try to get behind you to intercept. Then when a running space is clear, I want you to jump back and reach behind you  catching the ball and landing the jump, and as soon as your toes hit the ground, take off as fast as you normally do.  Now for the rest of y'all block for Kodie and Kyle. Kodie and Kyle also don't forget that when you are running to also block for yourselves.

We run the play over and over again, until my calves feel like jello from taking off on them so much. We eventually get it right and I push myself to get over the score line, and then coach make us run it over again a couple of more times until it is perfect. He gives us a break on running today, so practice is over, Kyle and I both grab our gear and begin to walk out to my truck. I unlock the truck, and we both throw our gear in the back and get in the front, all the windows immediately going down. I turn on the truck  making it roar once more, and drive off in the direction of both of our houses.

"K?"

"Yeah?"

"How are things with you and Mackenzie?"

"I don't really know, we fought again last night once again about the same pointless shit. We're not the same as we used to be. I feel different like my feelings for her are fading or some shit like that. I also feel like she's doing something, I don't know maybe I'm paranoid." I say telling him the complete truth, Kyle is the one person that I will actually tell this too.

"Dude she might be, but I have noticed y'all have been fighting a lot more than normal here recently."

"We fight like cats and dogs normally, but your'e right it is getting a lot worse here more recently than it has been."

"Okay bro, changing the subject; you kicked ass in football today."

"Thanks, you did too."

I turn onto the road leading to the housing development that we live in, and I turn onto his street and drop him off at his house. Then drive like another ten minutes to my house, on the way Mackenzie texts me and tells me that she wants to hang out tonight, and gives me the time. I pull into my driveway, and then go to get ready to leave.
