The amazing cover is by TheNekoShadow. The main characters are going to look like those above.
The ceremony. Everyone is required to go even though they only pick boys chosen by their dragons. I don't know why we girls must go. Oh, well it's not like I have anything better to do. My life is all based around earning money and using it to buy me things I need. This is how my life has been since I was young because my parents died. Yeah, I am an orphan. I would honestly love it if I were chosen simply because they provide for you and you get a companion you can depend on, your dragon. And you know you have a soul mate because your dragon tells you, for some it is within your academy and for others your mate is out in the world. Your dragons are also mates as well.I wander over to the square and sit in the corner on the ground. I love watching the dragons arrive, they look so beautiful. I watch as they descend and land on a cleared area on the opposite side of me. Everyone in the village comes and somehow I can still see clearly. The boys all line up and everyone else stands off to the side. There is a pause before the riders start picking boys out. Afterwards one announces, "We are not done. Our dragons sense one more strong rider out here, line up all other younglings." Everyone nods and does so. I gradually stand up and grab my father's swords and make sure my mom and dad's rings are on my fingers. I wander over to the line up before being pushed by one of the girls as they did not want to stand next to the orphan. I fall flat on my ass in front of everyone and as I start to get up the rider from before helps me up and says, "This is the one." We are told to get on behind the riders and as one goes to help me up, I look away from them before getting on in one graceful movement. Everyone else says their goodbyes and then we leave.
When we arrive at the academy I get down and double check to make sure I have everything. I stretch and look at the riders, waiting for them to lead us. The boys look nervous but I just put up my hood and follow the riders confidently. They lead us into a room with many eggs. The eggs vary in both size and color. They explain to the others somethings about them but I wander to one of them, it seems to be the largest of the clutch and it looks magnificent. It is an egg covered in red and black. I hear one thing, "You may touch the eggs." I smile and gently caress the egg. I can feel it react underneath my hand. I rest my head against the egg, feeling very close to it.
Eventually we are pulled out of the room and escorted to our rooms. The others must double up but because I am the only girl I get to have my room to myself. We are told to write down things we want not just to decorate our rooms but anything else we want. Apparently, after a while, once our dragons are ready, we must get everything for ourselves with our own money but not yet. So, I write down things like, books and bookshelves, sketchbook, paint supplies, art easel, variety of paper, black and red paint, etc. Without forgetting a guitar and soundproofing. After I finish I take it and give it to one of the people who brought us. After we deal with our rooms we are given full tours. I was one of the first done so I was on a tour by myself and after the tour the rider leads me back to the food area. We can order anything we want without any price. I don't know what most of it is so I just tell the chef to make me whatever they recommend. I smile and sit down as I wait for mine to get done.
Once it is done I get up and grab it. I say, "Thank you." I sit down by myself in the corner with my hood up so people don't know I am a girl, hell most people say that if I didn't have long hair then they would believe I was a guy anyway. I calmly eat my food as the rest of us newcomers finally come down and I shake my head at how rude they are. After I eat I rinse off my plates and set them in the tubs with the rest, to make it easier to wash. I walk back to my room and set everything up since it has all arrived already. First I deal with the soundproofing and then I paint the room with the door and the window open to let the fumes out.
After my room finally dries and the paint fumes are gone I close the door and start setting everything else up. Once that is all done I pull out my sketchbook and start sketching whatever comes to mind. Once my sketch is done I take a second and realize that it is a sketch of the ceremony. I smile and decide to paint it. I recreate the sketch, this time on a poster and after it is done I paint it accurately. I let it dry afterwards and once it is dry enough I put a cover over it and leave it on my easel. I stretch and make my window so it is just barely cracked and stuck like that until I mess with it. I shut off my light and get into my bed. I shift around for a while until I just grab a blanket and my pillow and fall asleep on the ground next to my bed.
The next morning, I wake up and get ready. I shut the window I cracked and go outside my room. Once I am out I notice a sign telling us newcomers to eat and then go to the auditorium for our welcoming speech. I put up my hood and go to the cafeteria. I end up being one of the few there so I tell them to just make what they suggest, seeing as how last time it was delicious. Once it is ready I grab it with a thank you and sit down in the corner from last night. I take my time eating as there are only the kitchen staff out here. Gradually the teachers come in and eat, some noticing me, most not. I finish up and rinse them and everything again. This time I sit in my corner and sketch in my sketchbook.
As I notice the other newcomers arriving I get up and sneak over to the auditorium. I sit in the far back and resume my drawing. My idea is to arrive early and stay out of the way so people don't notice me. As I draw I notice people coming in but I don't pay any attention. They all stick to their friends and other people from their villages. Eventually though someone sits right next to me for no reason. There was no one else near and there were plenty of seats elsewhere. I stop drawing to look at the person. It is, as expected, a guy, and for some reason he is staring at me. I ask him, "Something wrong?" He shakes his head but he is still staring at me. I say, "Just tell me what you want to know."
He starts battering me with questions about me, my village, and my sketchbook. I sigh, "First tell me your name. Mine is Li Theron." He nods, "Mine is Davu Jesse." I nod, satisfied. "My village is unimportant, I have nothing but memories there. Anything you want to know about me can be found out as we go. And this is my art book. You touch it you die." He grins and eventually people fill in the rest of the seats and the speech begins. Basically, the speech was talking about how we were chosen and that our dragons would hatch this afternoon so after we leave the auditorium we are to get ready for their hatching. They mention having placed a spot for our dragons in each of our rooms for the first few weeks as we grow attached to each other. I smile, I am close to meeting my companion and maybe even my soul mate. I make my way to my room and first notice that the cover over my painting has been shifted. I shrug it off and change into my attire.
I make my way down to the egg room and I make my way to the red and black egg again. I sit in front of it and just wait. My companion knows that I am here and I know they are and that is what matters. I pull out my sketchbook and start drawing as I wait for them to arrive. When I finish the drawing, I notice that it is of a guy and a dragon, I feel strangely connected to them and I sigh. I close the book and watch the egg. I can see it starting to move so I put away my drawing materials. I watch the egg as I wait for my companion to break free.
Sorry it took so long for those of you who were waiting. Idk when the next will be done, I felt my inspiration late at night so I can't write much. But here is this, please do vote and comment. You can ask for an update if it has been a while but not within a week please. If that happens then I definitely will postpone whatever I have finished as punishment
