Chapter 40
The morning went by so fast, I totally forgot to call Kevin and let him know that I would meet him for dinner. It was now noon so I picked up my office phone and gave Kevin a call.
“Hello, Kevin Rainey’s office this is Jessica speaking how may I help you?”
“Uh, may I speak to Kevin please?”
“May I ask whose calling?”
“I’m sorry this is Kevin’s personal backline is it not?”
“Yes ma’am it is but…”
“But what, get Kevin on the line, I need to speak to him.”
“Ok, do you mind if I place you on hold for just a moment.”
“Just get Kevin to the phone, please.”
This Jessica person put me on hold I guess to let her boss know he had a phone call. I wonder what she was doing answering his private line.
“Kevin speaking how can I help you?”
“So you have a new girlfriend answering your private line now?”
“Oh, Nikki I’m sorry I was in a meeting and my client was signing some papers, so I asked Jessica to please answer the phone. I didn’t know you would call on my private line since…well you know, the break up.”
“It’s ok I was just thrown off because she answered the phone and started asking questions, I thought you just had your new girlfriend answering your line.”
"No, it’s nothing like that. I couldn’t have a new girlfriend even if I wanted to. The only person I have thought about was you and I swear if you gave me another chance, I would spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
I didn’t respond, I just let that go and got to the reason for the call.
“I appreciate the space you have given me, and I just wanted to call and let you know that I am agreeing to have dinner with you tonight. Just remember this isn’t dinner to reconcile, it’s dinner for you to explain to me why you backed out on our engagement.”
“Is 7:30 ok?”
“Yes 7:30 is good.”
“Ok well I will be by to pick you up around 6:45.”
“That won’t be necessary; I will meet you at the restaurant. Where will be having dinner?”
“Is Ruth Chris ok with you?”
“Yes that’s fine. I will see you at 7:30.”
“Ok and Nikki thank you for giving me an opportunity to explain myself and my selfish actions.”
“No problem bye.”
“Bye Nikki.”
I hung the phone up and decided I would go and get me a salad from the downstairs cafeteria. I needed to call Toni and have her help me pick something out for tonight. I gonna make Kevin Rainey wish he hadn’t walked out on me. Let me call her right now before I go downstairs.
I dialed her number and waited for her to pick up. It rang four times before her voicemail came on.
“Hello you have reached the voicemail of Toni Douglas. I am unable to take your call at this time, but please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.”
“Hey girl, I need your help. I am going to dinner with Kevin tonight and I need you to help me find the sexiest dress to wear.”
“I am going to get my hair done and should be home around 5:00. Give me a call as soon as you get this message. I’ll talk to you soon…bye.”
