After getting yelled at by my parents and the principle for a good half hour, it was time to go home. I was kind of scared to ask about the colors and what I should do about Ian. I mean what if he'll never see the color? What if he's my soulmate and I'm not his? Will he find someone else? All these questions-and more-were swarming around my head.
"Okay something is up with you, you're never this quiet. What's wrong sweetie?" my mom asks as we pull in the driveway.
I take a deep breath and prepare to ask them. Here goes nothin. "Did you guys see the colors right away or did it take awhile?" I ask with a knot in my stomach. I want this to be normal. I want to know that it takes time and that he will soon see it.
I see my parents smile and look at each other with a glint of amusement in their eyes.
"Do you want to deal with this?" my mom asks dad.
"Oh no. This one is all you." He laughs and shakes his head, getting out of the car.
"Come on honey, let's talk about this inside."
We get out of the car and walk inside. It's starting to get cold. I love this time of the year. It's perfect. We get inside and my mom heads into the kitchen.
"Hot chocolate or tea?" she asks, digging through the cabinets.
"Tea please." I go and sit at the kitchen table and wait patiently for her to make the tea. I soon hear the microwave beep and she brings it over and sets it in front of me.
"Thanks mom. Now," I pause. "Can we talk about the colors?" I ask nervously.
She laughs and says, "Sure sweetie, what would you like to know about them?"
"When you touched dad for the first time, did you both see them the first time or did it take awhile for one of you?" I ask, desperate for an answer.
"We saw them at the same time. All soulmates do. Why do you ask?" she has a confused look on her face.
"I met this guy, well I more like ran into him, but when I touched him I saw them mom. I saw the colors and they were amazing and beautiful." I reply thinking back to the brightness and beauty of them.
"Oh honey that's great! Why did you ask about seeing them at the same time then?" she asks confused
"He didn't see them mom. He just looked at me like I was crazy. I don't know what to do or what this means." I told her, sinking into my chair. I grab my tea and take a long sip, loving the feeling of the warm liquid sliding down my throat.
"I'm so sorry, Ava I don't know what to do either. Maybe you just need him to fall for you the old fashioned way. Then maybe he will see them. Don't give up hope." She smiles and puts her hand over mine in a comforting gesture. She gives me a kiss on the cheek, and I feel a tear run down the opposite side.
After the talk, I went to my room and did my homework. After that I just listened to Wish You Were Here and tried to think about how I would get Ian to fall for me. And it's beautiful but there's that tug in the sight. I must stop time traveling, you're always on my mind."After the chorus finished, I couldn't help but allow the darkness to consume me in pleasant slumber.
I woke up the next day, and did the usual routine. Shower, clothes, makeup, breakfast. I grabbed my stuff and was about to step out the door when my mom shouted from down the hall "Good luck, Ava! Remember: Don't give up hope!"
I smile, and holler back "Thanks mom! Love you both!" With that, I shut the door behind me and hopped in my car. A few minutes later, I arrived in the parking lot and got to my locker for my stuff. After grabbing my 4-ton math book, I slammed the locker door shut.
