Chapter 2 -The Van

I came to a stop outside the mall's main entrance, out of breath with a stitch in my side. I made a mental note to go to the gym more often, feeling as though only a few blocks had felt like a full on marathon.

I wiped the sweat off my forehead and tried to slow my heart rate as I glanced around. I did a double take, just in case I missed it, but no, the van was no where to be seen. What was that all about? Was the van really following me or was it all a coincidence and I’m completely over reacting and I should just sign myself over to the nut house right this minute? These questions (among others, such as my mental state and where I truly belong) as I sat down on the curb, its coolness felt heavenly against my warm (and more than slightly clammy) skin, I welcomed it gratefully.

I laughed aloud to myself, gaining more than a few odd glances from passer-bys who probably thought I was nuts. What was I thinking? Somebody following me? Really? I felt crazy at such thoughts and found this realization rather comforting. Finally my heart rate returned to normal and I was able to relax a little, putting the whole foolish event behind me.

After about ten minutes of regaining my composure, I slowly rose to my feet with a groan, ten minutes too soon. I knew I’d feel soon enough the aftermath of that “little” run of mine. I guess I wouldn’t be able to forget the whole event, this pain had no intentions of letting me do so anytime soon, and this was only the beginning.

I groaned again at the thought of it. But the thought of an extra weekend of summer brought an instant smile to my face. Even if I had to spend the next three days in bed, at least I wouldn’t be behind a desk. Still, a part of me was almost drawn to the idea of school, I blamed it on my unmistakable seek of knowledge and shoved the thought aside. As I walked through the mall’s glass sliding door, another thought came to mind: How pathetic does it make me, being unable to run a few blocks without being out of breath and drowning on my own sweat? No matter how hard I tried, this thought wasn’t going anywhere

After sitting down and enjoying a 6 inch sub at Subway, instead of my usual footlong, I was feeling better about my earlier slip up and that “little” run of mine. Even though my metabolism is faster than I am doesn’t exactly mean that I’m “in shape” but, I thought, I let them think what they want to think, what they don’t know won’t kill them. I laughed at the thought as I finished the last bite of my sub, savouring every last second. I glanced absent mindedly from my tray as I took a long refreshing sip of my root beer and almost choked at what I saw, or rather who. I was glad to see the familiar faces, my second family and rather my favourite one. “Ron!! Selene!!” I screamed, still not fully able to speak, the scream came out as more of a choke than a scream, I doubt they heard me. As an award, and as I thought, they glanced around, wondering if it had been them that the screamer aimed their scream at or if there had been a scream at all. They hadn’t seen me until they heard me, which was usually the case with me, but they must of heard my pathetic excuse of a scream after all because they were still looking for who it had been.

I left my tray where it was and ran over full force to where they stood. They were now standing back on to me, clearly they didn’t know who it had been or where they had been. I jumped onto Ron’s back and clung to him like a monkey. I was awarded by the most girlish scream any guy on this planet could muster, I fought back the waves of laughter which washed over me and threatened my safety and I clung tighter to Ron in attempt not to fall on my butt in front of the whole mall. I had hoped for Ron’s sake that it had been Selene’s scream and not his, or at least that other people would think so.

He soon recovered as he realized who it had been and laughed in a deep kind of way, clearly in attempt to make up for his not-so-manly scream. He held my legs and spun around which caused me to scream even louder and even more high pitched than he had. He smiled in satisfaction, knowing exactly what my reaction would have been before he even did it. Curse friends who knew all your fears and curse them twice over for using those fears to their advantage, or as revenge. Both Selene and Ron, being my bestest friends EVER, knew my fear of heights and of being dropped, and Ron, with his solid 6ft height and no-so-solid frame, my odds of being dropped were high. I fell on my butt enough on my own, I don’t need to add being dropped to my list of events which lead to my butt making full on contact with the floor.

Ron laughed and set me down, “I thought you were a mugger, god E, next time give me some sort of warning before you go all ninja on me, you could of given me a heart attack for christ’s sake, we need to get her a collar Selene, one of those with the bells so we know when she’s coming.” He smirked, and Selene giggled, I purred and began to rub my cheek on Ron’s arm, and this caused Selene to go into a full on giggle fit, and when she giggles, I can’t help but giggle and soon enough, all three of us were all making animal noises and laughing at the reactions we were getting from stander-bys, I recognized a few from earlier and knew for a fact they thought I was crazy, but hey, maybe I’m the normal one.
