Chapter Four
I walked into school the next day with my head held high. I read somewhere that if you played confidant people would think you were confident. It was some psychological warfare stuff...
Outside the weather was just perfect so I had on a pair of faded denim shorts and a black v-neck with a red rose crawling up the side. I had on a pair of black leather fingerless gloves and a headband with a red lace bow on it was pearched in my dark brown curls.
Against Brian's protest I wore my solid black cowboy boots. He said they looked like I was trying too hard but I just laughed at him. I dressed like this all the time back home and he never said a word but ever since I told him about meeting Cam again he was totally against everything I was wearing.
Brian was right behind me as I made my way towards the administration office. Mom called ahead and they already had all of our stuff ready for us. I took mine and split ways with Brian.
I found my way to my locker and tossed my bright green hoodie in. Not knowing what else to do I meandered into my homeroom. There was no one else in the entire room, not even the teacher. Everyone else seemed to be standing in the hallways talking to one another.
I moved to the heater and sat down, pulling out my phone and texting one of my best friends from back home. We'd changed timezones and were an hour ahead now so I knew that he'd just be waking up.
He text me back and soon I was engrossed by this little piece of home. I laughed at the picture he sent me and suddenly could feel eyes on me. I looked up slowly and found a pair of light green eyes.
Ty stared at me for a moment before tentativly walking over and coming to rest alongside the heater next to where I was sitting. He stared at his feet for a long moment before he looked up at me.
"Good morning, Cassie." Ty said, sounding like he was trying to be friendly but it was hard for him.
"Good morning, Ty."
"Do you need any help getting around?" he asked. I could sense that he was trying to overcome the awkwardness of not knowing what to say.
"That'd be lovely actually. This school is so much bigger that the one back home." I was a junior this year and back home I didn't have to worry about finding my way around after five years. Now this was unfamiliar territory and I wasn't sure how I felt about that.
Just then my phone went off and I checked it again. I laughed aloud and Ty turned his questioning eyes to me. "Sorry. It's one of my best friends. He told me I'm not allowed to be looking at other guys while I'm here and that I'd better come running back to him soon because he misses me already." I laughed again at Maddox's silly words.
I heard something that sounded like a growl and my head snapped up. Cam was standing in the doorway looking mighty peeved about something.
"What's got your shorts in a twist?" I asked.
Cam walked over towards Ty and I only to stand in front of us both. His stance was casual but the tense set of his shoulders told me something was off. This wasn't the same Cam that stole a jug of chocolate milk away from me and only gave it back to me when I promised to go out with him. This was a different Cam ccompletely. One that I wasn't too sure how I felt about just yet.
"And what gives this friend the authority to boss you around? Maybe you want to look at other guys..." James suggested, throwing his arm around my shoulders. I looked at him a little startled, only just noticing his presence in the room.
I laughed at James. "Well, Maddox likes to act like he's my possessive boyfriend especially around guys because he's just protective of me. He's only joking though." I told them.
"How do you know he's actually not interested in you and is just keeping the competition at bay while he gets you to fall in love with him?" Ty asked. These boys, I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes towards Heaven.
"Oh he doesn't need to wait. I love that boy so much already!" I said sarcastically, clutching my phone to my chest. A rumbling growl came from Cam's driection and I rolled my eyes at him and poked him in the chest. "Oh you don't need to worry your pretty little head, we're still going out Friday. And besides, Maddox is gay."
