You're going to have to cook the meal... (682 words)

---

"Out of all the day in the year, you had to get injured today."

"Quit whining, will you, Matthew? It happened on accident and you can't change the past."

"Do you think we should or-"

"We are not ordering any takeout food. Before you say anything, my answer is no."

"But, what are we going to do about the holiday meal? My family is coming over in just a few hours, Y/N..."

"I got an idea, Matt. Why don't you cook the meal this year?"

"Are you actually serious? You do remember that I almost burned the apartment after I tried to cook something to bring over to your family's Thanksgiving a month ago?"

"I have faith in you, Matt." I chuckled to myself as I hobbled over to the couch, sitting down so I could elevate my swollen and hurt ankle on top of the coffee table. "And I'm praying for a Christmas miracle..." I mumbled the last part to myself, catching a break that he hasn't heard what I said about him.

---

"How does this taste?" Matthew brought up a spoon up to my face, wanting for me to take it and taste it. "It's the sweet potato soup for the appetizer."

I thanked him, taking the spoon from him and tasted the soup; which, to be honest, wasn't bad at all.

"It tastes pretty good. It does need a bit of salt, though." I smiled up at him, handing the soup spoon back to him. "Are the croutons to go with it ready to go?"

"Yeah, they're almost ready to be taken out of the oven," Matthew nodded his head, kissing my forehead before walking out of the kitchen. "What else do I have to cook?"

"Well, you have the roast beef; mac and cheese; stuffing; and peppermint-chocolate layer cake to cook," I answered his question, but gave him a thumbs up, "but don't worry, I will be here to taste test along the way, Matt."

"I'm going to have such a workout today," Matthew mumbled to himself as he walked into the kitchen and pulled something out of the oven, which I'm assuming was the croutons for the soup.

---

"Mr. and Mrs. Tkachuk, come on in!" I smiled, grabbing the crutches from the light tan hardwood floor and hobbled my way to the front door to greet them.

"It's nice to see you again, Y/N," Matthew's father, Keith, chuckled to himself as he and Matt's mom, Chantal, entered the apartment. "What happened?"

"Matt and I were outside, trying to get the groceries out of the car. Long story short, I slipped on a patch of ice and sprained my ankle." I answered his question as I closed the door behind me and heard clattering noises coming from the kitchen.

"Matthew, is that you in the kitchen?" Keith laughed as he hung up his coat and Matthew yelled as his response.

"Yes, Dad, it was me in the kitchen." Matthew walked out of the kitchen, flour all over his shirt. "Don't ask about the flour situation...But, I'm so glad to see you again, Mom and Dad. I missed you both so much."

"We missed you too, Matt," Chantal laughed, giving her son a hug before also giving me a hug. "I don't know about you, but I'm hungry after a long trip to Calgary..."

---

"The food was actually pretty good, Matt! I'm so proud of you," I chuckled, wiping my mouth on the napkin adjacent to my dinner plate.

"We have to agree with Y/N there, Matt." His parents both agreed, nodding their heads, "We thought you'd burn down the kitchen."

"Thank you all for the reassurance," Matthew sarcastically smiled, taking a bite of the layer cake. "6 hours of hard work to be teased about it."

"Aww," I giggled, kissing his cheek, "but I appreciate it honey. I love you."

"I love you too, Y/N."
