I could feel my heart pounding against my chest, the screams had returned. Was this really the end? Am I really losing my life at only seventeen to a diseased beast? I scrambled up from the floor and opened the drawer to my bedside table. My hand searched the inside of the drawer until it met a hard, cold metal object. My gun. I clasped the handgun and steadily made my way out my room, however, before I even left Cassie gripped my arm.
"You have a frickin' gun?! What the hell are you going to do with it!" She hissed.
I rolled my eyes. "What do you think I'm going to do!? I am finding out what's banging on the door! I need the gun in case...you know...in ca-"
Cassie angrily interrupted me and grapped my shirt pulling me towards her. "In case what, huh? In case you get attacked by those things? Don't bother even trying to find out what's out there. No surprises, you and I both know it's those creatures!"
"You can't be sure, what if it was my mom or dad? Or even your mom or brother? Could you really risk that based on what you think? Even if behind the door is the creature we'll die eventually, might as well get it over with now." I knew this theory to be impossible of course our families were dead. Nevertheless, it was the only way I coulld force Cassie to agree. Who knows it could be a member of the military coming to save us or anyone trying to save us? If only...
"Fine" She huffed. Cassie's grip on me loosened and I made my way to the door. Since I first heard the hammering on the door the sound had seemed to intensified. I froze once I reached the door, Cassie panting heavily behind me. Gun ready, I slowly reached out to twist the door knob, once in my hand I carefully opened the door to ajar.
Suddenly I fell to the ground from the force of the door being pushed open. I heard the quick slam of the door as someone ran in and went towards my couch. I exchanged a curious glance with Cassie. With my gun tightly gripped in my hand I cautiously made my way to the couch . A small girl who looked no older than twelve years old laid breathlessly on my couch. I pointed the gun directly at the child, her blue eyes were wide with fear as she stared at my gun but I made no move to lower it.
"Please don't shoot..." She pleaded.
"How do I know you're not one of them." I sternly questioned.
"Do I look like one of them to you!" She barked.
"No but you may have been bitten...and you haven't changed just yet."
"Well I wasn't. See!" She thrust her bare arms out in front of her, to proove she had no bites.
I wearily nodded and lowered the gun. "Sorry, if I scared you."
"It doesn't matter, we are all scared right now. I guess I shouldn't of ran in here without explaination, however, I didn't think I had time. Not if wanted to live anyway, though thinking about it now I may have been safer out there." She said gesturing towards my gun."Oh, my name is Willa and yours are?"
"I'm Safia and this is Cassie." I pointed to my friend cowering behind me, obviously scared of this confident pre-teen. I marvelled at WIlla and her maturity even in these unpredictable circumstances, she held her head up high.
She gave us nod before clapping her hands together to gain attention. "Now we're done with introductions, we need to escape."
I stared at her in confusion. "Escape, why?"
"Why do you think I ran up to your apartment on the top floor, in the first place?" She paused briefly and raised her eyebrows questionally at us, before continuing on. "Because those bastard mutants have ambushed all the residents on the lower part of the building. Thus, if I came to the top floor I would have a longer time to think of a plan to escape. Plus I thought I could hopefully pick up some companions on the way, I know you two live up here. I've been watching you..." A small smirk appeared on her lips.
