My father sat in a chair across from Draig, and stared at him. I sat at the end of the table and watched them both. Draig seemed to be avoiding eye contact by looking at the mug of coffee my dad poured for him. It was silent for a while. Draig glanced at my dad for a second, then took a sip of the coffee. That's when my dad finally spoke. "So what town are you from?" Draig hesitated to answer. At first it seemed like he was busy processing the taste of his drink, then it seemed as if he was thinking of a lie to tell. "I've been traveling for such a long time now," he said, "Its kind of hard to remember."
"I see." My dad replied, not believing what the man was saying. "Well you must at least remember the last place you traveled to before you came here." Draig stared into his coffee mug as if he was in a trance. "Yeah," he responded, "but quick question, Where's the hotel I'll be staying at?"
"We're actually letting you stay here in this building".
"Here? with all of the towns records, and important papers."
"Yeah, just so my soldiers can keep an eye on you 24/7. So if you even think about trying anything funny," he paused, and looked at me, then back to Draig. "Well, your gonna wish you hadn't."
"I did not realize I needed a babysitter." he paused to take a sip of the coffee, "But you wouldn't want to harm me anyways. This town needs me."
"I'm sure we can manage without you like we've been doing for the past 13 years."
"Doesn't seem like you've been doing so well from what I saw."
"You haven't even proven that your able to help us yet." My father leaned back in his chair, and kicked his feet onto the table. "So back to my question." Draig hesitated to respond.
"This isn't something a kid should hear." My father looked at me.
"Toby, could you please go into the other room?"
"Yeah." I answered. I slowly stood up from my chair and walked into the lounge room even though I wanted to hear what Draig was going to say.
The 2 kids that Draig brought with him were laying down unconscious on the two couches across from each other. They both looked to be about my age, or a little older. The boy was laying with his head hanging off the couch, and his mouth was open. It was as if he fell asleep after partying all night. Some of the soldiers slept that way after doing as such. I looked over to the girl, who laid completely still with a blanket covering all but her face. She had skin that was practically the color of paper. It was the complete opposite of her hair, which was jet black. I found myself attracted, and walked over to her slowly. I carefully pulled the covers down to her waist. Her hands were folded over her stomach, which was exposed by the type of shirt she was wearing. I looked over her body until I found myself staring at her breast, which were also showing slightly because of her shirt. Apparently it made me aroused, and I was about to touch her.
Suddenly her eyes opened widely. It startled me, so I stepped back. She looked around the room, but somehow her dark grey eyes never past in my direction. When she saw the boy who was laying across from her, she stopped looking around. "Braig," she called out quietly. The boy did not respond. She called out again only this time, a little louder. "Braig." The boy suddenly woke up, sat up quickly, and looked around frantically. "Huh, what." he said. He looked back, saw the girl, and laid back down into the same position. "Oh, hey Saigry." He looked over at me. "Who's your friend?" The girl, who still did not look at me, ignored his question, and asked her own.
"where's father?" The boy rolled off the couch before answering.
"I don't know." He then stood up, but nearly fell back down cause he lost his balance. I could tell he had a headache from how he was holding his head. "Wait," he said. "I think I can hear him". I was surprised. I couldn't hear anything but the occasional sound of construction work outside. The boy slowly walked towards the next room then turned the corner. "Father." he called out. After a few seconds, Draig came into the room.
"Hey son." he said as he rubbed the boy's head. They both smiled. "Come meet Mr. Oni". he then said as they both walked into the other room. The girl, who was now laying on her stomach, stared at them as they walked away. "So Draig is your father?" I asked, trying not to sound to nervous.
"Yeah." she answered without looking at me.
"Ok. Well my name is Toby." She finally looked at me, but only a quick glance. It seemed as if she learned everything about me with just that one look. She stood up, and walked into the other room. I felt left-out now being in the room by myself, so I went into the other room with everyone else.
"I'm gonna have to excuse myself now," my dad finished saying. "I have some important matters to take care of. Please make yourself at home." My dad walked out off the room, and then left the building. I thought he would have brought me with him, but he didn't. "Father, where's our swords?" Braig asked Draig.
"Mr. Oni locked them up." Draig answered
"Why?"
"We don't need them right now. Besides, you need to get more rest." He rubbed Braig's head again. "Go lay down son."
"Ok." Braig walked back into the lounge room to sleep on the couch. Draig then turned to his daughter. "Saigry," he started saying, "I want you to find as much information on this town as you can."
"Where would I find that at?" She asked. Draig chuckled.
"Everything about this town is in this building. All you have to do is find the room with all the records. I would suggest checking the library." Saigry started smiling. "Ok daddy," she said. Her voice changed to that of a little girl. She then walked out of the room. Now that it was just me and Draig in here, I became frightened. I could feel goose bumps on my arms. He looked at me and saw the fear in my eyes, so he smiled to make me feel better, but it didn't help much.
I backed out of the room when he turned away. In the next room, I caught a glimpse of Saigry walking up the stairs, so I followed her. As I approached the last step, I saw her turn the corner, so I sprinted to catch up with her. She was talking to the guards in front of the door. "You do not have permission to be up here." one of the guards said. "Leave now."
"Its just a library." Saigry said. She spoke in a very calm tone. "I was told to make myself at home, and reading makes me feel as such." The guards stood still, and stared at her. That's when I decided to help her. "Its cool fellas," I said as I walked over to them. I then put my arm around Saigry's shoulder. "She's with me." The guards looked at each other briefly, but went back to staring. "Very well." they then said, and stepped to the side. I then walked her into the library. The guards closed the doors.
