I woke up in a strange room.
"What? Where am I?" I asked. Nobody replied. I looked around the room. I was in a hospital gown.
"What the...?" I looked around some more. It was dark. There was a figure on the guest couch with a long blanket. They were sleeping. I was so confused. I thought I was visiting... ugh, I forgot her name. Well, whoever she was in the hospital, not being the patient. I heard movement. I think the figure under the sheets was waking up. Maybe they could answer some of my questions.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Oh, hey, you're up," A feminine voice replied. Their voice sounded familiar.
"Who are you?" I asked. She turned the room light on. She sighed.
"Ruby, this is the 4th time this week that you've gotten up in the middle of the night. Is something bothering you?" She asked.
"Yeah, why am I in here?" I asked. There was no reply.
"Well?" I asked impatiently. The girl sighed. She pulled up a wooden stool and sat beside me.
"Do you... remember who I am?" She asked. The face looked familiar, I couldn't put my finger on it, though. She looked at me with pleading eyes. I shook my head and sighed.
"No, should I?" I asked. She looked down with disappointment.
"I'll take that as a yes," I sighed.
"Well, maybe I can learn. What's your name?" I asked.
"Sapphire," She said.
"Sapphire... that name sounds so familiar. Like I've heard it before..." I said. She smiled. She looked hopeful.
"Why are your eyes covered up like that?" I asked.
"Right, I forgot you don't remember..." She said. She paused.
"Now, don't freak out when I show you them," she warned.
"Why would I be freak out?" I asked.
"Just, don't, okay. Promise?"
"Yeah, sure," I said.
"Ruby," She said sternly.
"Okay, okay," I said, putting my hands up in defense. She took a deep breath and moved her bangs out of the way.
"Y-you... you have only one eye..." I froze. She immediately covered it up, seeing the expression on my face. She frowned and turned away. I immediately snapped out of it.
"N-no, it's not like that. It's just something I never thought I'd see." I apologized.
"It's okay, I know what you meant." She said, cutting me off. I just sat there quietly, trying not to make it worse. After a few moments of silence, I couldn't help but ask.
"Hey, do you know why we're in here?" I asked her.
"There was a bit of an incident..." She sighed.
"Go on," I said eagerly.
"There was this accident. A gang of girls started picking on me. One held a gun and-" She started tearing up.
"You ran in front of me. They shot you in the shoulder. You fell to the floor. Blood...everywhere. When you arrived at the hospital, we almost lost you... the only way to save you was to inject this medicine into you."
"That doesn't seem so bad," I said.
"That's not the point. This medicine... it was a prototype. The doctor said that if you took the medicine, you might forget something. At least one major thing that's happened in your life." Her bangs were covered in wet salty tears.
"H-hey, you okay there?" I asked, trying to calm her down. I looked at her with comforting eyes. She sniffled.
"Yeah, fine," She lied. I sighed.
"Do you know when we leave?" I asked.
"In a few hours. I'll go get the nurse." She said, getting up. I grabbed her wrist. She looked back at me.
"Wait, Sapphire. Don't worry about me. I'm sure I'll remember sooner or later. I have to," I promised. She smiled and walked out of the room.About 4 hours later, the nurse came in and told me to get my clothes on. They were in the bag under the bed. I got out of the bed and grabbed my clothes. I examined them. They looked just like what I was wearing in my dream. I put them on and walked out of the room.
I looked around for Sapphire. She was sitting on a waiting bench. She was sobbing. Seeing her do that made my heart break. I barely know the girl and I already feel this way. I walked up to her and put my arm around her and rubbed her shoulder.
"Hey, hey. It's okay. I'm here," I comforted. She leaned on my shoulder. I started blushing.
"Um, want to come to my house?" I asked. There was no answer.
"Come here," I said, hugging her. She started to calm down.
"R-ruby?" She asked.
"Yeah?"
"You're really warm," She said, cuddling into me. I felt bad. I barely know her, but I feel like I know everything about her. I chuckled. It felt like there was a huge hole in my heart. Like something was missing in my life. When she was around, I couldn't feel the hole anymore. I can't describe the feeling, but it felt amazing. We walked out to the parking lot and walked to my car. Sapphire stayed cuddled into my arm. I opened the passenger door to let Sapphire in. Then I hopped in the driver seat and drove off.We got to my house. I put the car in the garage and opened the front door, letting her in first. With both of us exhausted, we both fell asleep on my couch within seconds.
