*** Elodie's POV ***
'Where in the World would you describe Australia to be situated?' my Geography teacher, Mrs Phillips, asked the class.
'Elodie?' she said. I shook my head, exiting the fantasy world I had entered for the last 50 minutes. I stared at her for half a minute before I realised that I was meant to answer the question. The classroom was dead silent; my fellow peers waited for my answer, gripping their pens like journalist about to interpret what I was about to say. I stumbled on my words before I answered,
'Australia is located below the Tropic of Cancer and above Antarctica. The Tropic of Capricorn cuts through the middle of Australia and is located in the Southern Hemisphere.'
The teacher gave me a puzzled look. Damn, I probably got it wrong.
'Very good, Elodie,' she said before turning to write on the white board.
'Australia is also known as the island continent ...' she continued talking.
See, I'm pretty skilled at multitasking. It's what girls do best.
When the class ended I swinged my shoulder bag on my shoulder and carried my books in my hand. My bag was so full because it has all my swimming gear in it. I had swimming training right now. Students started to head their way to the busses or to their ride but I started to walk to the other side of the school where the pool was located.
'Hello Couch Rooney,' I greeted friendlily, as I walked up to her.
'Hello kiddo,' she said, as she marked my name of her role. She looked at me, examining me strangely. 'Well, what are you waiting for? Get changed!'
I scooted to the change rooms, dodging the huge dents in the ground before slipping on a puddle and falling flat on my back. My close my eyes and covered my face with my arms, with embarrassment.
'Oh my lord! Elodie! Are you okay!' someone screamed.
'Oh my god! Someone get Couch Rooney,' another girl ordered.
'I will!' announced a third person.
My lower back felt like a sword had stabbed through it and my head was throbbing. I was on the floor for 30 minutes and no one had come to help me. No one. I couldn't stay there all day so I decided to help myself. I rolled onto my stomach and pushed myself into a push up stance. I drew my legs up in line with my pelvis and rolled up. My back was still killing me but I couldn't miss out on swimming training. I was in 8 events and the interschool carnival was next week. I couldn't resign from my events because of an injury. I would let the team down. I grabbed my bag and walked slowly towards the toilet cubicle.
'Elodie Prinsloo! Are you okay?' Rooney asked in an uncaring manner.
I bit my cheeks, holding back my anger. She could have asked me that when she came to help me but NO! SHE DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ME TO COME AND HELP ME; DID SHE!
'I'm fine,' I said as I threw my towel on the grass angrily.
'Oi! Prinsloo! Watch that attitude of yours,' yelled Couch Rooney. I paused for a second. I had the biggest urge to punch her in the face at the moment. I joined the last lane and dived through the water. My strokes were violent and powerful which made me glide through the water faster. I like to let go of my anger by swimming. I can scream underwater and no one will hear me.I can cry underwater and no one will see you. That's what I love most about swimming. You can release all your anger and then come out all fresh again, ready to put up with people's crap again in a positive mood.
My back was still aching after swimming and I had to walk home. Dad couldn't take me because he had to be at the hospital. Someone had crash their car into a train and the person needed immediate surjury to save his or hers life. I didn't mind though. Dad is doing something good. He's helping people and that's what I love most about him. He always puts other people before himself but he always puts other people as his priority before me.
The wind started to whistle and moan as it blew a ghastly cold breeze. The curtains in my room were blowing frantically, causing my body to shiver all over. I saw sitting at my desk in my room studying for the upcoming science test.
s= ut + 1/2 at^2
I was re-reading a question over and over again but I couldn't solve it. My mind was somewhere else.
"An object is moving with a uniform velocity of 20ms-1 south. It is then retarded uniformly at 15 ms-2 for 12 seconds. Find the displacement of the body after this time."
C'mon, think Elodie. Think. Okay ...
initial velocity = 20ms-1
Acceleration = 15 ms-2
Time = 12 seconds
s = 20 x 12 + 1/2 15 x 12^2
I snatched my calculator and punched in the numbers until I heard a rustling outside. I averted my eyes to see the window. It sounded like the bushes were moving. Or maybe someone was there. I ignored it and continued typing in the equation. The sound appeared again. This time, it was louder and clearer that something was outside my window. I gripped onto the sides of my desk with tension. My arms tensed and the thoughts in my heads were running wildly around in my mind.
Someone could be stalking me. Or wants to rape me. Maybe its a demon. No, demons aren't real. No, they are. Harper said her friend was once possessed by a demon. Maybe a demon wanted to possess me. Or rape me. Oh my lord! Save my soul!
I dashed out of my seat, heaved the window shut and pulled the curtains together, hiding my fear of the dark. Phew! I was safe. I closed my door and laid flat on my bed. Screw studying. I just needed a good nights rest. I slid into the duna and cuddled my pillow pet.
Okay, okay. I'm safe now. All good. No one can touch me. I'm safe. I just need some sleep, I kept telling myself. I closed my eyes and floated into a deep sleep.
She was there again, still as fresh as a daisy .
She was in a room
A very familiar room too.
She kept eye contact on me as if she was guiding me somewhere
She rosy cheeks flustered as she walked further into the room
Her smile soon faded
As she pointed to a chest of drawers
Her smile turned into a frightened, vulnerable expression
She opened the drawer
with such precission and care
before it swallowed her whole
and all I heard were her screams
deafening my ears ...
I woke up. Sweat poured down my face, dripping onto the bed sheets. I had just had a nightmare... about my mother. Although I didn't think it was just a nightmare. There was more to these dreams than I thought was possible. I jumped out of bed and turned the light on in the hall way. My feet guided me somewhere. They took me to my father's room. The cream coloured walls looked yellow as the light rebounded off the walls. My eyes scanned the room, examing the antique furniture my father had collected over the years. The room had a very retro tinge to it. Suddenly, my eyes stopped with terror. There, in the left hand corner of the room, was that chest of drawers in my nightmare ...
