Chapter 1
The Arrival…
“How do I look sweetheart?” Florence’s mum crooned. Sofia looked disappointingly at her mother and put on a fake smile,
“You look … great, Mum.”
Suddenly, the doorbell jangled through the ancient, rickety cottage.
“I’ll get it!” Florence shouted, whilst frantically tumbling down the stairs.
“Darling, you’ve got to behave tonight, ok?” Mum asked gingerly, “No midnight snacks, go to bed at 10.30, be good for your sister and DON’T open the door to anyone!”
Florence nodded vaguely at her mother and skipped along the hallway, only just dodging one of Sofia’s many shoes, and tugged open the front door. There she saw her best friend, Isaac Meils.
“Hi, thank you so much for tonight, it’s going to be loads of fun!!” He said giggling.
He galloped along the hallway, nearly squashing the grey, fluffy cat which went by the name of Spike!
“Whoa out Fluffy – oh sorry, I mean Spike!” Isaac exclaimed anxiously,
“I nearly stepped on you!” Mum and Dad walked out from the study, Dad trying to do up his tie, but not succeeding. Mum was talking through things with Sofia, but she wasn’t listening at all.
“Ooh, your BOYFRIEND’S here!” Sofia sneered.
Isaac stared down at the floor, his face nearly going as red as his hair!
“That’s enough, Sofia. Are you sure you’re going be able to look after them?” Mum asked cautiously.
“Oh no, I think they’ll scare me to much!” Sofia teased,” Of course I’ll be able to look after them; they’re like 5 years younger than me!”
“We’ll be back by one and I expect you two to be in bed! Sofia, you have to be in bed but you don’t have to be asleep.” Dad said, looking at Mum precariously.
As Mum and Dad strolled out of the front door, Florence felt a sudden, unexplained feeling of fear run through her body. However, as the car’s headlights slowly faded away, it started to rain bitterly.
