Bright lights pierced my vision as I regained consciousness. I stared up in confusion as I struggled to remember what happened, but then I heard footsteps making their way closer to the door, so I shut my eyes quickly and steadied my breathing.
“She awake yet?”
“No”
“D’you know her?”
“Yes.”
“What’s her name?”
“Rhea.” My breath faltered for a moment when I heard my name. Logan? What w-
Cold, icy water drenched me from face to stomach. “What the hell! How- wha… you…” I incoherently stumbled to form out words.
“Hahaha! Your face! Priceless!” Logan stood at the side of the bed, clutching his stomach and guffawing in laughter while I gaped. “Shut your mouth sweetheart, you have to resist me… Did you really think I didn’t know you were awake? I was in the room the whole time!”
By that time, my memory had come back and I’d shut my mouth with a glare. What about the footsteps? Who was that?
“That was Luke, my brother… well, step- brother.”
Did I say that out loud, I wondered.
“Yes, you did. You snore in your sleep by the way. And drool.” Logan smirked, moving closer to me while I pushed myself up into a sitting position.
“I do not! You take that back!” I gasped in indignation. I knew I didn’t snore, but did I drool? I subconsciously wiped my mouth. No drool. “Liar.”
His smiled widened, but he didn’t say anything. My eyes shifted around the room, avoiding his blue eyes. The room was small, but cozy. A nightstand stood beside the bed. There were clothes in a few places, but it wasn’t messy. Rock band posters plastered the walls. A floor to ceiling window occupied the far end of the room, with the curtains opened, displaying the full moon that was out tonight. I could still feel his gaze on me, so I broke the silence.
“Is that your girlfriend?” I blurted out without thinking. He followed my line of sight until it rested on a framed picture. His muscles, which had built up tension when I asked, relaxed.
“No, that’s my younger sister. She’s 16.”
“What’s her name? Does she go to our school?”
“Liana. She goes to an all-girls academy. It’s called Maxwell Academy.”
“I know that school! My friend goes there too.” My other friend, Ryka, went there. She’d been my friend since pre-school when we both came to school with the same backpack. Good times.
“What’re you smiling about?” Logan was frowning in confusion, his face a bit too close for my liking. When my eyes widened, he moved back with a hasty apology.
“Nothing, I just-“
A door opened and my sentence faltered. A guy walked in, holding two Chinese takeaway cartons.
“Coffee guy?” I asked at the same time he said, “You’re awake!”
“What’re you doing here?’
“I live here.” His lips twitched in amusement. Oh! That was why his eyes seemed so familiar. He was Logan’s brother!
“You two know each other?” Logan’s head snapped back and forth between us, trying to figure out what was going on.
