"Each friend represents
a world in us, a world
possibly not born until
they arrive, and it is
only by this meeting
that a new world
is born."
-Anais Nin.His hair is gorgeous.
His hair was like a rainbow. It was thoroughly bleached by the sun. He had probably spent a lot of time under the sun. There was black, brown, red, blonde and dark brown. A total mixture.
My eyes moved from the hair to his face. That was where the real shocker was. There was a large scar running from his forehead to his left eyebrow, to a part of his left eye down his cheek a little and finally to just beneath his left ear.
I couldn't help it but say, "What happened to your face?"
He chuckled and said, "Hey, nice to meet you. My name is Lemuel. That's how to start a conversation young lady."
I rolled my eyes and said, "I know how to start a conversation young man. Besides, you haven't answered my question. What happened to your face?"
Lemuel sat at the base of the tree and said, "You don't give up easily do you?"
I smiled. That was one quality I got from Father and I was proud about it.
Lemuel picked up a pebble and threw it. His arm was long and slender. I couldn't help but notice his long legs too. He had the lean but muscular build of a Shepherd. He was probably one because they were the ones who frequented this area.
He said, "I got the scar from a lion."
Okay, MAJOR SHOCKER! I couldn't hide my agape mouth as I stared at Lemuel. Lions were not really common since there had been the recent deforestation of our lands, so the lions were quite rare and so, coming across one means a lot. Not to mention their foracious essence. He had met with one and had apparently survived. Shocking! Really shocking and quite hard to believe.
Lemuel continued, he said, "I was out deep in the wilderness searching for green pastures for the flock and then a lion came and carried off a lamb. I could have let it off with the lamb but I don't know why but chasing the lion felt right. So, I ran after it and well, rescued the lamb but it left me with this ugly scar."
It was truly shocking. I asked the only question that came to mind, "So, did you kill the lion?"
Lemuel folded his palms and and put it under his head, using it like some sort of pillow. He said, "I did. Ended its life but not without some injuries."
I stared at Lemuel in disbelief. So, this boy had supposedly fought with a lion and lived to tell the story. I couldn't believe it. He didn't look more than eighteen or nineteen and he had killed a lion. Then, at what age? Maybe twelve or thirteen because the scar looked quite old, say maybe five-six years old.
I said, "I find your story hard to believe. What age were you supposed to have killed this lion? Twelve?"
He laughed heartily. I was taken about by the sound he made with his laughter. It was really boyish and quite cute if you ask me.
He stood up and wiped his trousers. He said, "No one ever believes my story. I guess that's why the lion decided to give me the nasty scar. So that people would believe me when I say I met a lion."
I snorted and said, "Yeah, right whatever."
Lemuel said, "Why not check out the scar young lady and see for yourself if it wasn't made by a paw."
I jumped down from the tree. I landed directly in front of Lemuel. He stood a head above me. He was tall. Really tall. He was also so close. Really close.
I moved back an inch and he grabbed my waist, pulling me closer. I was dumbfounded. He said, "Not so fast little girl. You still need to check out the scar."
I swallowed. He was really close. Our bodies were technically only an inch apart. His arm around me felt really powerful and muscular.
My eyes slowly travelled to his face. His complexion was beautiful. He was properly sun-kissed. His nose was straight. His eyes. They were what held me spellbound for a moment. His eyes were truly beautiful a masterpiece in fact.
They reminded me of two elements. The green sea and the earth. At first, one could mistake his eyes for being brown because it had just every shade of brown in the world.
Then on a deeper look, they had some green in them. That reminded you of water. Not the blue sea. But your mind just congures up an image and you see the sea with a greenish bluish colour. Just like his eyes.
My eyes slowly travelled to his forehead where the scar was. I couldn't resist the temptation as I touched the scar and he closed his eyes. I slowly traced the scar from its origin which was his forehead to the middle which was his eye. Then I traced the scar to its end.
His skin was warm. Really, really warm. I felt this tingling sensation in my hand due to my contact with his skin and I didn't want to let go.
My hand was still at the ending of the scar just below his left ear. Then again I couldn't resist the urge as my hand went up and touched his hair. It was warm due to the sun and surprisingly soft.
He opened his eyes and stared at me. I stared back at him. Deeply into his eye. Then he said, "Touch enough to fill your pockets for days?"
I yanked his hair hard and he abruptly let go of me and I took a step back.
His yelp of pain sounded funny to me as I laughed. I said, "So, you killed a lion big deal?"
Lemuel rubbed his hair which was the position where I had yanked and laughed. He said, "So you believe me now princess?"
My eyes lit up in surprise. How in the world did he know I was a princess ? The whole kingdom didn't actually know all our faces except Keziah's and of course father and mother and maybe the triplets but definitely not us, the others.
I wasn't even wearing my tiara or royal dress or any of such. Then how in the world did he know who I was?
Lemuel laughed at my shocked expression and said, "See you later your highness." Then he mimicked a bow.
He stared at me contemplating something. Then he said, "I killed the lion at fifteen not twelve or thirteen."
Then he picked up his staff and walked away.I quickly collected my thoughts and brought myself back to earth so, I yelled at his back, "How did you know my identity Shepherd boy?!!"
He only turned and grinned at me. Then he walked away with his flock.
The only question on my mind was how in the world did he know who I was?
