The next day Sam was enjoying her peaceful sleep, until it once more got interrupted by her ringing phone. Only barely awake she grabbed it from her night desk, answering it without looking at the caller. “What,” she snarled.
“Hey, do you always answer the phone like that?” the deep voice on the other side said.
“Well do you have any idea what time it is?” she bit back.
“It’s 8 a.m.”
For the love of… It was practically night. “Why does everyone always call this early?” Sam wasn’t happy. She needed her sleep, at least eight hours of it, more was always welcome.
“Probably because they can’t wait to talk to you.”
Sam almost heard him grinning through the phone. It was a pretty sweet thing to say, but “Wait! Who is this?”
“Ace,” he said. Oops, another embarrassing moment for her, but remembering what he just said made her all giddy. He couldn’t wait to talk to her. Still eight a.m. was way too early for her to resemble anything human. Let alone having a normal conversation.
Last night was slowly coming back to her now. Not because she was hung over or anything, her brain just needed time to boot up. Mostly that horrible fight with Thomas spooked in her mind, “So, how are you?”
Ace chuckled, “I’m fine. Black eye and swollen lip, but that’s it and I’m guessing Thomas looks worse. The guys of course think it’s so cool. Our manager on the other hand not so much.”
“How so?”
“Because now he has to explain it to the press,” Ace clarified.
Indeed that sounded bad. Sam could only imagine what the tabloids would say. “Just tell them the truth. You got in a fight with a guy, protecting a girl. Nice and heroic.” And hoping they would leave it at that, but she didn’t say that out loud.
He sighed heavily. “If it were only that. The guy and the girl would get into trouble, ‘cause then the press wants to know everything about them. Certainly the girl. I mean who can steal the heart from this rock star and…” he droned on.
“Okay I get it,” Sam interrupted. Wait? Did he just say the girl stole his heart? As in she stole his heart? No, she was probably imagining things. There was no way she heard that right and even if she did he probably just meant hypothetically. Like what the tabloids would say, not how he felt.
His next words cut off her train of thoughts. “So what are you doing Monday after school?”
Monday. What was she doing on Monday? “Not much, probably just some homework.” Oh my God, she sounded like a complete geek. He’ll probably thinks she was a major bore.
“I was thinking maybe we could do something, together,” he nearly whispered, sounding very unsure of himself.
Sam was totally freaking out right now. Ace was asking her out, at least that’s what she thought it was. Trying to hide her wacko behavior she tried to play it cool. “Yeah sure, why not. Pick me up after school and as long as I get back home in time to do some homework, it’s all good. Okay?”
Waiting for his response she only got silence. Did she not show enough enthusiasm and did he now doubt asking her? Sam really didn’t want to screw this up. “Ace?”
“Okay,” he answered quickly, “I’ll pick you up and bring you back.” He sounded off.
“Are you alright?”
“Yeah, why shouldn’t I?” Ace asked.
“Oh no…just.” Sam felt like an idiot. The guy was perfectly all right and she was hearing things that obviously weren’t there. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow,” he smiled. “Bye.” Ace hung up the phone.
Sam only just realized that Monday was tomorrow. She was going on a date with Ace tomorrow. There was barely any time to prepare for this. Tomorrow was so soon. Crap.
Speed dialing Cherise; Sam heard the lovely voice-mail voice. Of course, no sane person would be up at this hour on a Sunday. She left a message asking Cherise if she could call her back. When she called Timo, the same happened.
After that was done, Sam realized she didn’t have to be anywhere or do anything, so she could easily snooze for a little while longer. Before she knew she had dozed off again and only woke when her grandpa knocked on her door telling breakfast was ready.
Feeling better after two more hours of sleep, she changed into some old faded jeans and a loose shirt. It was definitely going to be a lazy Sunday. Entering the kitchen her Grandpa was stacking the pancakes on her plate. Sam loved his pancakes. It was also about the only thing her Grandpa could cook well.
Sitting herself down, she drowned the lovely pancakes in syrup before attacking them, with just enough time in between chews to breath. Sam had finished them all, when Grandpa was only halfway through his stack. He was dressed in some khaki slacks with a crease in the middle and a green button op shirt. His way of eating pancakes was a little more civilized than hers. She couldn’t help but smile at that.
It was moments like these Sam was so grateful to have him in her life. When her parents had died, her grandparents were on the other side of the country, but they came back here to take care of her. Grandpa quit the army and took over her dad’s music shop. He didn’t want her to move around too much and her grandmother thought it was best to keep Sam in a familiar environment.
They lived happily together, at least as happy as you could when you just lost your parents, but she loved her grandparents. They took good care of her and they were pretty young so they could still join in all Sam’s games and run after her. Until three years ago, when Grandma got sick. It all happened so fast. After six months it was over and they buried her next to Sam’s parents.
Now it was just she and Grandpa. Them against the world. However everything changed. The house was quieter, Grandma was always the cheerful one and her laugh would ring through the entire apartment. They still laughed, but it wasn’t the same. Grandpa was a good man and Sam knew she could always count on him, but he wasn’t so good at showing his emotions. He tried and sometimes it was all right and she believed she could tell him anything, but at other times it was like he closed himself off.
Sam looked at her Grandpa and saw that he was staring at her. “What?”
“I’ve been saying your name a couple of time, but you’ve been off in dreamland again,” he chuckled. “Your phone has been ringing,” he explained.
Sam felt her cheeks going red. “Sorry”, she apologized, but Grandpa just shook his head at her. Putting her empty plate and glass in the sink, she went back to her room to check her phone.
She had three missed calls all were from Cherise. Quickly calling her back, this time Cherise answered.
“Hey, Sammy”, Cherise chirped.
Sam told her about the phone call from Ace and together they analyzed everything he said. Cherise also wasn’t sure if Ace had really meant that Sam had stolen his heart or if that was just something the tabloids would think. Continuing on Cherise told her all about Zack. Apparently they were now officially a couple, which was good. The not so good part was that Zack was taking her to school tomorrow, so now Sam no longer had a ride.
“Can’t Zack pick me up too?” Sam asked her friend.
“I don’t know,” Cherise said, “He said he wanted some alone time with me before school.”
Sam really didn’t want to take the bus tomorrow. No senior still took the bus! “Oh come on, Cherise!” she pleaded, but Cherise didn’t answer.
“Fine I’ll see you tomorrow,” she sighed and just hung up the phone. Great! Freaking great! Timo wasn’t answering his phone, so Sam had no idea if he could maybe give her a ride. It really looked like she was taking the bus to school. Just kill her now!
