Dogs are cool I guess

*Andrew's POV*

I chuckled. I could hear my sister's whining from across the house. "Pleeeeease! I swear I'll take care of it!" Ah, more pleading for a puppy. It had been my sister Sarah's goal for a few years to get a dog. And my mom was still against it. "No Sarah. We don't need a dog. It will just get hair everywhere." And there's the phrase she repeated every single time. I feel sorta bad for taking humour out of it, but hey what can you do? I pulled on my black and purple jacket. It's my favorite. On the back it says 'HoNk' but most people don't get the reference. I walked down the hall  and yelled into the kitchen, "Hey mom, I'm going into town, be back later!" I heard her confirmation and headed out the door.

I walked down our long dirt driveway, passing all the trees. We live in a forest. I'll admit that sometimes it's a bit frightening. Especially when you hear wolves howling or the sounds of bears fighting so close to your house. But it's sorta grown on me, all the nature, so I just hummed a little tune as I turned onto the road that led to town.

It wasn't too long later that I strolled into our humble little town. There wasn't much, but there was enough. A school, market, hardware store, and the new music store. There were a few more selective shops and utility places as well, but my destination in mind was the hardware store. I would have loved to go to the music place, but I had to get some stuff to fix a shelf in my room. I decided to take a little short cut. It was just an alley behind some shops, but it was faster than the main road.

I walked between the florist and the photography place and started down the alley. It was a bit damp, because it had rained a good amount over the last few weeks. Looking around, there wasn't much to look at. So I just kept walking. I eventually got to the dumpster that signals to me that the next turn leads to the hardware store. I was humming a tune my mom taught me when I was little. It soothed me, even if I wasn't panicking. And it was nice. I stopped in my tracks when I heard a little whine. I looked around, then started humming and walking again. I heard it again. A whimper. It sounded like it was close, so i decided to investigate.

I cautiously approached where I thought the noise was coming from. It was behind the hardware store. It was much dirtier here. Greasey, muddy, rat feces, and blood. Wait, blood? I rushed over and saw what looked like an old white carpet. I reached out to poke it, and its head popped up and growled at me. Wait carpets don't have growling heads. Or tails. Or paws. Shit. It was a dog. It looked like one of those husky dogs. But then I saw what the blood was from. It was tied to a pole and had obviously been trying to pull his paw away, and chewing at it too. It's been doing good if its goal was to chew its paw off. It was bleeding badly and looked infected. I took a closer look at the animal, while still keeping my distance. It wasn't that big for a husky, and it was very undernourished. Poor thing's probably been out here for days.

I kneeled down and hesitantly held out a hand to the growling beast. It ceased its threat and sniffed my hand, then whimpered. Guess I'm not threatening. I moved closer and pat its head. I then looked at the knot tied around the dog's paw. Geez, what a knot. I couldn't figure out how to get it undone, so I pulled out my pocket knife. I heard the dog growl slightly and I shushed it and stroked it's head. Then I cut the rope, though it was a bit difficult. The second the rope snapped, the dog scrambled away from the pipe, then yelped in pain. I rushed over and helped it to stand back up, but the infection was pretty bad. Sighing, I noticed the collar it was wearing. I perked up slightly, hoping there would be a way to take him home or maybe vet information. I read what was on the collar. I murmured it to myself, a habit when I read. "Eli the wolf, property of Lane."

I raised a brow. The realization the dog was actually a wolf was a bit shocking. But at least now I had some names. But no address. Sigh. I considered my options. I really didn't have many. I couldn't just leave him here. He was hurt. Badly. Another sigh. I picked up the rope and cut it from the pipe, then used the length to tie to his collar. "Looks like your coming home with me, Eli."
