He always smelled bad, like a pair of socks that had been worn the last 5 days and The pizza takeaway that had been shut down countless times for health reasons. It Was never my choice to sit anywhere near him but since my surname was Corbett and his was Cobain I found myself having to hold my hand to my nose throughout most classes. He never talked to me or to the teacher, I'd often see him scribble or doodle on every page he owned and see song lyrics I had mistaken for quotes at the time. It was like this for years in school, nothing changed he became something of a routine for me until that time he talked, he seemed happy this one day. I'll never forget it, he turned to me in our literature class;

" I managed to finish my first song" he smiled which I had never seen before and of course two dimples appeared, what a waste of dimples. I don't remember replying but we walked out of that class together and I found myself smiling as he walked away. I didn't turn to walk away just yet instead my eyes followed his awkward walk down the school hallway, I saw him meet a guy I didn't recognise at the end of the hall and they continued off together, that's when I found myself turning around to get to my next class in time.

It was the same day and I was standing outside the dull school building lighting my cigarette when I saw the Cobain kid again, he was with the boy he met at the end of the hallway and another boy that I knew from woodwork now with long brown hair, his name was Dave I was sure.

"Kurt show us that mental song you've been going on about" Dave teased standing in front of him. Kurt kneeled down on his heels and pulled a few scrunched up pieces of paper from his pocket. He then rose from his position. "We need to get a joint into us before this shit man" and the three of them began to laugh as they walked off. Kurt turned his head around and looked right at me, making no facial expression then slowly turned his head back around. I sighed and threw my cigarette on the pavement.
