I put on a shirt with tons of stars and went outside. My shirt matched the sky this time of night. I walked across the block and arrived at town square a few minutes later. The grass looked vibrant still in the stars. One street light flickered. It mattered not.
'Twas a vacant night on the streets. I waited a little long for the flickering street light to burn out, and it did.
I was by the edge of the street, which was the water's edge. I leaned over the metal bar that was blocking me from the coast and pulled myself onto it. If I could get over the edge...
Deciding to return home, I pondered Isabel's condition. An ignorant "shhh" escaped my lips and I remembered that she was now Sal. I felt horrible for letting Madam feed her that milk. That nice act was all a trick. Madam is a wretched woman with a worm of a husband.
It mattered not. At least I was being treated well here.
I started to run fast back to the library and snuck inside through the back window. Once inside I tiptoed up the stairs and into the little compartment where Helen and me slept. My partner looked cold by the fireplace that was burned out, all black embers.
It mattered not.
I threw myself against my bed. Shhh, shhhh, shhhhhh...
Madam's image danced before my closed eyes. "Pardon?" She had asked me when I told her that Sal had befriended Curzon.
Shhh, shhhh, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
"What did I tell you about silence?"
"Shh."
Shhh.
"It's the devil!"
Shhhhh!
"She's taken her as a personal maid."
"Pardon?"
Shhhhhhhhhh!!!
"No, ma'am..."
"Come on, Anne. Noise affects young children."
Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
Everything's gonna go right. Sal will be alright. Becky will be alright. Curzon will be alright. General Washington will be alright. Even I'll be alright.
A wind swept through the open window.
I stood on my bed and jumped, yet couldn't reach it. I climbed on the sill but was to weak to close it. The lace curtains didn't do much when drew.
Where was Sal when I needed her?
