"This isn't going to be a basic class you can pass without practicing and doing work outside the classroom." Mr. Trug spoke, looking around the class of about 40. "That being said I am excited to be working with this years class and learning what you guys got."

"Now, pair up and get on a mat." He pointed to the door, where just outside there were mats on the dirt.

I looked to my left where Amber, my roommate sat looking back at me. "We doing this or what?" She asked.

I nodded and grabbed her hand standing up and following the crowd.

Once everyone was paired up and on a mat, Mr. Trug came out and inspected us.

"How many of you have taken any form of martial arts or self defense classes?" He asked from the front.

About half the class raised their hands, mostly girls, me included.

"Make sure you are paired up with someone who hasn't taken a class." I saw some people moving around and switching. Since Amber hadn't raised her hand we stayed together.

I glanced at her and raised an eyebrow, "What? I had a body guard."  She shrugged. I shook my head with a grin.

"Okay, so if you have taken any type of martial arts class, you know you don't want to be the one to initiate and throw the first punch. You want to observe your opponent and keep certain parts of you covered." He moved down and between the mats. "I want you guys to stand facing each other." I turned to Amber from one end of the mat while she stood on the other.

"Bring your hands up to your chest and keep them relaxed, not in fist. Keep eye contact with your partners and don't look at your own hands. Imagine you are holding a balloon or a ball and close your eyes." I heard him say from nearby as I closed my eyes.

"Good. Imagine you are holding a rugby ball, an american football ball. Think you are holding the ball on the farthest length. Think of how smooth or rough it feels in your hands." I followed what he was saying and it felt like I really had a rugby ball in my hands.

"Wow," I heard Amber whisper from in front of me. I opened my eyes and looked at Amber, who was staring down at her own hands where a white and brown rather rugged looking rugby ball lay.

"Crikey!" I exclaimed, looking around at how some students had similar balls and then down at my hands where I saw a blue rugby ball before it was gone and I was holding nothing.
