Prologue
The stars glowed, pulsed, sparkled, and danced in the night sky in shades of whites, yellows, blues, and reds. A few danced across the sky leaving colourful trails behind them. Faint blue streaks of wind blew lazily across the land causing the grass caught in the breeze to glow a brilliant green as they danced.
The grass went on for miles and miles but eventually thinned out and gave way for the sparkling sand of the beaches. Crystal clear waves crashed onto the brilliant white sand and dazzled in the setting sun.
Off in the distance lights shone with intelligence and technology from a great city nestled in a valley. A traveler in a battered old cloak made his way to the warm glow of the city lights carrying a very mysterious item ready for trading. He watched the city-goers carefully, searching for the right one.
A smile stretched across the travellers face. A boy stuck out to him like a sore thumb. The traveller made his way to the boy who was sitting alone, a dark cloak wrapped around his body. The boy's hair was black as a midnight sky and fell into his shining turquoise eyes.
The boy looked up in suspicion as the figure dressed in rags approached him. He didn't want to be bothered, so he held out a coin for the traveller to take thinking he was a beggar. His opinion changed quickly when he saw what was up for trade.
He took the item and examined it in awe. It was a ring. Pure gold and silver with engravings of serpents and ancient runes on it. Set in the middle was a perfectly smooth-cut white stone that shone when hit a certain way by a light. It seemed like the beautiful object was compelling him to it, getting into his mind and whispering to him, telling him to take it.
So the boy sealed the trade with ten credits and both walked off in different directions happy with what they got, one of them unknowingly leaving with a horrible price held over their head.
Somewhere far, far away a girl woke with a start. A feeling crawled across her skin. She knew something had happened, something bad.
