I woke up to the sound of my cell phone ringing. I quickly answered it so Silvi wouldn't wake up.
"Ciao, Mamí," I greeted her nervously. "What's wrong?"
"Daniel Roberts," my mom replied, annoyance in her voice. "Why in God's name are you sleeping on a roof?!"
I looked around frantically. "What? Where are you?" I demanded. "I can't see you!"
"Shhh!" she hissed. "You'll wake the girl up!"
I looked back at Silvia. "Yeah, sorry," I said, more quietly this time. "And to answer your question, yes. I am sleeping on a roof. But it's not like I could just sleep inside Silvi's house. Besides, she doesn't want to be in there, anyway. Not after what happened yesterday."
My mom sighed. "Just... be more careful, Daniel!" she replied. "Anyone could've attacked you when you were sleeping! Don't make yourself so vunerable!"
"Yeah, yeah," I said. "Sorry, Mamí. It won't happen again."
"Don't give me that tone of voice, young man," she scolded me. She sighed. "Just... be home at noon, Daniel. We've got things to discuss."
"Okay, Mamí," i replied. "Bye." I hung up before she could continue, and lay back down next to Silvia. She muttered something in her sleep. I nudged her gently. "Hey, Silvi. Wake up."
Her blue eyes opened, and she let out a tired groan. "Danny," she complained. "Don't you ever let me sleep on the roof again." I laughed, and we sat up. She rested her head on my shoulder.
"You should get going," she suggested. "You know, before Lovino finds out I'm not in my room and blows a hole in your skull."
I smiled, kissing her forehead. "Yeah," I replied. "You still have that flower I gave you?"
She nodded, patting her pocket, where I could see black petals sticking out. "Of course," she said. "I'm not that irresponsible."
"Good," I replied, taking her hand in mine. "Hold on to it. It's a sign that we're together. It's the symbol of... Us."
She smiled, and I stood. "I'll call you later, Silvi," I said. "Make sure Lovino doesn't answer the phone this time."
Silvia laughed, and I turned, running to the edge of the roof and jumping onto the other one. As I ran across the roof of the neighboring house, I looked back. Silvia was sitting alone on her roof. I sighed, but kept running. It was a Black Thorn habit; you don't cling to the past. That means you never, ever look back. You keep your eyes fixed on the road ahead, and keep running. That's how you get your tattoo.
That's what makes a Black Thorn a Black Thorn.

I walked to the end of the alley and knocked three times on the roof of the largest dumpster. It was pushed open, revealing not garbage, but an eighteen year old girl wearing black. She grinned at me.
"Welcome back, Daniel," she said. "You've got your mother worried sick."
"Pfft. Yeah right, Adona," I scoffed. "Like she cares if I get hurt. All she cares about is me marrying Silvi."
Hannah laughed, and I climbed into the dumpster. She moved a cardboard box, revealing a hole in the base of the dumpster. "By the way, Daniel," she asked, making way for me as I climbed down the hole. "How are things going with that Silvia chick?"
"Amazing," I replied without thinking. "Er - I mean, good. Yeah, really good, Adona. Everything's fine."
Adona laughed again. "Yeah, I'm sure they are," she replied. "Especially since you got kidnapped by Alfonso Bianchi. Yeah, seems like a real healthy relationship to me."
