Born in Margesville, South Carolina the summer of 1945, I had a boring childhood. That was until Anabel Smuthers came along. She turned the world as we knew it upside down and shook it. Leaving us frazzled and confused. For awhile the adults tried to convince us neighborhood kids that Anabel had only been a figment of our imagination, but no matter how old we got she always stayed in our hearts. After all, who could forget an average girl who turned into a murderer?
It all started the last weekend of July, 1958. There had been a For Sale sign in the front yard of that yellow house two doors down since January and it was finally being taken down. The Smuthers had moved in. The family consisted of Ms. Smuthers and her daughter Anabel. I met Anabel Saturday morning when my mother gave me a plate of cookies and told me to go invite them over for dinner later tonight.
I walked up the beaten down, white steps. As I was ringing I heard glass shatter and a scream.
"Mama no! Please Mama...Please." yelled a girl. In no time at all the girl who had been yelling answered the door.
She wiped at an oncoming tear and rudely asked.
"Yes?"
I just stood there in awe. She was gorgeous. Her shoulder length, chestnut hair and forehead bangs complimented her amazing baby blue eyes. Impatiently standing there and tapping her foot she asked me again.
"Excuse Me. Do you need something?"
"Oh, Yes. Sorry. I live two houses down and my mother wanted to invite you and your mother over for dinner tonight. It's nothin' special just a nice home cooked meal so we can get to know eachother."
Before she could respond there was a woman standing in the doorway next to Anabel. As she answered for the young girl, the strong smell of whiskey over powered me. It smelled like the living room after pops had his Friday night poker game.
"We'd be glad to come darlin' " The also beautiful woman slurred out.
"Ok, great!" I replied and pushed out the cookie plate, "My mama loves to bake!"
"Thank you--?"
"Oh, my name's Carolina!" I told her.
"Ok, Thank you Carolina" Anabel
I turned on my heels and started to hop down the steps when I heard someone call out to me,
"Carolina!" shouted Billy from down the street.
"Whatyda you want Billy?" I yelled backed.
"What's that new girl like" he asked while jogging towards me, and motioning to the front porch I had stood on moments before.
"Well, she's real pretty.. I don't know too much about her though..my mama invited her and her mama over for dinner tonight." I hated talkin' to Billy. He was so mean, and so..so FAT. Billy was always stealing all the neighboorhood kids' food, and calling us fowl names.
"Ooh, can I come over for dinner too?" He had finally caught up with me and we were walking side by side on the sidewalk.
"Billy! You're so rude! No. You can't come over for dinner! Have your own mama make you somethin'!" With that, I turned on my heels again and walked right into my house.
