"If you'll excuse me for a second, I need to use the bathroom," Scott said after a while, pushing his chair back.

Allison's mom, Victoria, nodded, and Scott left the dining room, his footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Victoria turned her gaze to Kate, her expression curious but cautious. "So, apparently, you spent the day with Kylie. What did you two do?"

A small smile appeared on Kate's lips.

A small smile tugged at Kate's lips, her eyes glinting with mischief. "Oh, we went into the forest. We had a girl's day. It was fun, wasn't it?" she said, glancing down at Kylie.

Kylie's face lit up, and she eagerly nodded. "Yeah, it was fun!"

Victoria's eyes narrowed slightly, her tone taking on an edge. "And what did you two exactly do?"

Kate's smile didn't falter, though her eyes took on a sharper glint. She could tell Victoria was wary—rightfully so. The last thing Victoria wanted was Kate doing anything reckless with a child as impressionable as Kylie.

"Oh, nothing too wild," Kate said smoothly. "We searched for some animals, played hide and seek. Kylie even told me that she thought she saw a wolf. Isn't that right, honey?"

Kylie nodded again, her eyes twinkling with excitement, and a small, secretive smile on her face. "It was a big, big wolf," she said, stretching her arms out wide for emphasis.

Allison, who had been listening quietly, frowned. Chris and Victoria exchanged a look, their expressions growing tense before they both fixed their eyes on Kate.

"But I thought there were no wolves around here," Allison said, her voice tinged with confusion.

Kate shrugged, standing up and placing Kylie back on her seat. "Must've been a rogue," she said casually, brushing her hands together. "I'm gonna go check on our other guest, in case he got lost in the house." She turned and walked out of the room, her boots clicking against the hardwood floor.

The room fell silent for a moment, the air heavy with unspoken questions. Allison glanced at her parents, their expressions unreadable, then looked back at Kylie, who seemed completely unfazed.

It took a couple of minutes before Kate returned, a smirk on her lips.

"What took you so long?" Allison asked, eyeing her aunt suspiciously.

Kate waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, our guest couldn't find the bathroom. Don't worry about it," she said, taking her seat again, her tone nonchalant. But there was a glint in her eyes that made Allison think there was more to the story than Kate was letting on.

Scott came back a while later, looking like he was in a hurry.

"Hey, um, we should get going. Uh, thanks for dinner," he said, making a move to grab his sister, but Kate quickly intervened.

"No, no, no, no," Kate said, her voice firm as she pointed toward his seat. "You gotta stay for dinner. I wanna know more about you." Her tone was sweet, but there was an underlying edge that made Scott hesitate.

Scott looked at her, the tension between them palpable. He sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "Okay," he said, reluctantly sitting back down.

Victoria smiled politely at Scott, trying to ease the awkwardness. "Allison was just telling us that you work for a veterinarian," she said, her voice light.

Allison chimed in, her face brightening. "I told them that you put the cast on the dog I hit," she explained.

Scott nodded, his eyes dropping to his phone as it buzzed with another text.
