They had nothing to say to each other, and that was just fine. They didn't need words tonight; simply being together was enough. And yet, it was not enough.
She sighed, taking his hand, and rested her head upon his shoulder. Turning slightly so not to disturb her, he placed a soft kiss on her forehead. He put a strong arm around her small and delicate frame, giving her time to get comfortable before pulling her closer. She took in a deep breath, taking in his scent and trying to memorize it' trying to memorize everything about him before he got on a plane and flew away.
She had wept in his arms when his dream became his reality. She had withstood those weeks when he wasn't fully gone. She had run her hands over what was left of his hair. And she knew she would cry again that final day, but his arms wouldn't be there to comfort her this time. Making a promise to herself, she said she wouldn't think about him leaving until she had to; she wouldn't cry for him. She had to be strong. He was a Marine now.
He looked down and saw the pain in her eyes, the distress in the set of her mouth. Guessing what was the cause he wrapped his arms tighter around her and whispered into her ear. "I'll be home sooner that you think," he said as her tears finally came.
