As I walk down the dark and quiet street, I take my flannel and tie it around my waist. I reach into my back pocket for my phone to check the time.
7:32 pm

Then stick it back into the depths of my pocket and glance up at the sky as I stroll. The summer sunset was vibrant with combinations of orange and red. I kick a small stone in front of me and think back to a couple of months ago. I was taken from my home in New York. I lived with my mom, but after the accident, it was only me. Now I live with my older brother Justin in the state of "purity" known as Michigan. That is until I turn 18.

I hear a sudden stick snap from behind me and my head spins. The memories of the past fade away and I see a young man. His dark sweatshirt shined in the starlight as he approached; humming a tune. His tough boots had the ground shake as he took a step and stumbled, but caught himself on the bark of a tree.

I was about to turn around and continue walking away from the drunk stranger, but all too soon, someone calls me. The ringtone bursts through the silent streets and his stare shoots up at me. My heart races as he catches his balance, I don't like the vibe of being alone with this person.

I hear his boots following me as I slowly walk away, picking up the paste and suddenly I feel the force of a strong hand grabbing my arm, pulling me back. He pushes me up against the brick wall of a building and I scream. His hand quickly covers my quivering lips and I try to bite them. His other hand comes up fast and hits the side of my face; making me squeal. His breathe smelt like alcohol as he spoke; words I could not decipher. He unknots my flannel around my waist and it falls to the ground. I turn away but he grabs my chin to look at him and kisses me. I clamp my teeth down on his lip and he growls in agony. My leg comes up in defense to kick him and I run.

Everything was dark now, the only light I saw was the closed windows of people's houses and a propped door open on the distant street corner. I sprit to the steps and stumble next to the metal railing. I looked in the direction of where I came from but all I saw was the empty street.
As I sit on the concrete, my hand comes up to fix a strand of hair behind an ear. I start to cry, hoping I never see that man again.

The light from inside the creak glows and I look up; unafraid I help myself up and approach the door, making my way inside. It was a church, with lights that looked like windows, making the room bright as ever. For a second I forget it's nighttime.
I take a seat in one of the rows of benches and I wait. I wait for someone to appear; someone or something that'll make everything go back to the way it was before the accident. I'm not a Christian and it's hard to believe when so many bad things have happened. I suddenly feel a presence.
I turn around but no one was there. I was clearly alone, but I didn't feel it. Someone was watching me and deep down I hoped it was an angel.

***

My phone vibrates and I stand up, pulling it out of my pocket again. It was my brother Justin
Where are you? It's getting late

On my way
I type but the thought of walking into the dark street makes me freeze. I open Uber and pay for the cheapest ride I can find. I don't live far.
I walk over to the door once again and open it; a red car pulls up to the curb and the young man rolls down the window

"Would you like a bag of chips and water??"
I smile a toothy laugh but realize everything costs money and I only had a handful. I shake my head and get in the backseat. As I close the door and get cozy, he speeds away in the direction of my house.
